so this is my first, my problem is with my 97 xlt 4.0 sohc with about 80k miles on it. at random times when i get in and try to start it up it just cranks and cranks. but if i give it just a little bit of gas it will start right up. i don't have to hold my foot to the floor or anything just have to give it a little. once i get it started if i don't keep my foot on the gas it will stall. this problem happens at random times and temps (outside temps).

any help would be greatly appreciated

same here...

I have the same prob. It happens every once in a while. Once I get it started and start driving two footed to keep the revs up, it will eventually be ok again and I can drive normally. I changed the fuel filter but it still happens. I also put in some fuel treatment to get any water out of the fuel system. I don't know if it is coincidence, but it seems to happen right around 3/4 tank of fuel? 98 Sport, OHV

Wow, another case of not using the search feature. This has only been discussed 345,675 times.

The problem is your IAC valve. Replace it.

thank you for the help i will look into the iac valve.

and i did use the search but no post matched that problem exactly! or at least not that i saw, since i don't have to hold the gas all the way to the floor.

Firstly Billy welcome to the best explorer site around.

Secondly Jason Bad day at work huh:D

Thirdly Billy keep on posting your probs and we'll do the best to answer you. The IAC is the most likely culprit.

All the best

Howard

hey Howard thanks a lot. i will look into the iac valve and let you know what i find.

and i really like this forum it seems to be really helpful!!!

thnx

I did a search about this prob too. I found something about the IAC but it wasn't related to this prob. Anyways, thnx for all your help. I will try to fix it tomorrow.

If you do a search on IAC cleaning you'll find all you need. Some people have not had success with cleaning but it might be worth a go. All the best.

PS welcome to 98blackxsport as well such an unusual name:D :D :D

The problem I'm having with my wife's X is similiar but not the same. It won't start occasionaly on the first turnover, but if you depress the gas once and wait and few seconds and try again it starts right up and then idles perfectly and runs as normal. This would'nt seem to be the IAC valve as described by the rest of the problems I've encountered on this forum. Seems to happen more on colder days though. And the really odd part of it is when we plugged in the block heater one night it still did the same thing the next morning.

Looking for some ideas.

Aviator, I was having the exact same symptoms in my 94. Once I replaced the IAC, poof, no more problems. It's a pretty cheap/easy fix.

so i called around last night and this morning to find a new IAC valve..... once i found someone who could get it (auto zone said they couldn't) they were about $75 but called a friend of a friend (parts guy at the local ford dealer) and he is getting me one for $50. it will be here Friday.

well i went and picked up my new IAC valve on Friday after work but on the way home my check engine light came on. the truck was stilling running fine. got home changed the IAC and i am stilling having idle problems and the cel is still on. so now i guess it's off to auto zone to see what codes i can get from the computer.

Billy have you had the manifold o-rings replaced under the 00M12 Owner Notification program? That causes idle problems too.

no i have not had the o rings changed yet. when i took it to auto zone the error codes came back as 0171 and 0174 so i did a search on those and come up with 00m12 so yesterday i call the local ford dealer and went and picked up the 00m12 repair kit for $35 and i am planning on tackling that project this weekend. my X has 83k so i missed the recall. i will let you know how it all turns out.

Billy,

I'm assuming you've seen this thread. But just in case it may be helpful when you attempt the repair.

yeah i have seen that post. it was a really good post (thanks) i printed it out and i found some other sites that walked you throw it also.

so this week end i worked on the X and replaced all the parts in the 00M12. but when i got it back together it ran 100 times worse than it did before i started working on it. so to night i am going to take it back apart and make sure i didn't forget anything. Now it idles really bad and shakes the truck and then when it does get warm it still dies and idles bad so i had to mess something up. just not sure what..... well i will let you know tomorrow. or if anyone has any ideas let me know.. i have a few hours left at work before i can go work on it.

make sure all vacuum lines are connected properly and any of the little caps didn't pop off the unused lines.

so i got the X running good again last night. it was a vacuum hose that didn't get back on.. stupid me!!!!

thanks for all of the help!
