Hey guys. '94 Explorer 5-speed manual. (Hydraulic clutch went out.) Step one is to remove the shift lever. I pulled up the boot, and there's this nut on a stud sticking through the shift lever sorta to the side - in the horizontal position. My Hayes manual says "remove the bolt and pull the shift lever straight up and off the tranny." But it's a nut with a stud. I've got the nut off, but the stud is still in there. Doesn't want to budge. I can't believe I can't figure it out. I don't even see how it comes off...

Anyone who's pulled an manual tranny - tell me the secret! Thanks! Mark

There's a thread on clutch replacement tips and tricks in the "Under the Hood and Drivetrain" forum that I've been updating as I go through my project. The trick is to take that nut off, put it on the opposite side of the stud that points to the rear and tighten it down until the stud comes loose. Trust me on this. It'll all make sense once you get it out.

Ahhh... the web is a wonderful thing! Pulled right out - now that I see it's like a wedge. Thanks Brock94! I'll check out the tips/tricks - because the next hurtle is getting that funky quick-release hydraulic line freed. Thanks again!

and now just wait till you unbolt it and try to remove it... first make sure you've got all the bolts out including the starter. Y-pipe might get in the way when you'll try to take tranny down. You might run into some problems removing Y-pipe since bolts will be pretty stubborn... Been there, done that... keep us informed.
