help:Morning Bollins here,
I am from Worcestershire England and live not far away from the clent hills, 47 years old married with one kid(Stinky) and a dog called Alf. I have been looking for a 4x4 forum for help and advice.
I have just bought a 2004 Ford Ranger xlt Thunder C/cab 2.5 td which is still under warranty 3Months, the problem is when I start it from cold in the morning it rattles like hell for the first 3/4 minutes then goes quiet, sounds like a bearing to me any ideas? I really need to get this sorted while it is under warranty.

Cheers Bollins

Welcome, Bollins!
I moved your thread to the Ranger section, and slightly renamed it to help folks help you.
That engine is not available here in the states, but many of us wish it was!

Ahhhhhh your Ranger is pooched ! ! Pack it up and send it to me ! :D:D:D:D

If it was still 3 months warranty I'd be camped on the dealers doorstep.

The rattle

The rattle sounded like it was coming off one of the pulley's, however I didn't drive it for a couple of days(Christmas plonk and all that)and when I started it yesterday no rattles at all:D as for giving it away give me a break I have waited years to get one of these baby's. I used to drive a mk1 when they 1st came out, what a beast I used to pull a 16ft trailer totally over loaded with tanalised timber ringing wet+ 4 blokes and 2 full sets of tools sand and cement, it never missed a beat! My mk2 is a little more refined with leather seats aircon and hasn't had to work very hard by the look of it I paid £6000 for it you can pick them up for about £4500 but silly mileage 140,000+.
Catch you later Cheers Bollins. any one any idea what the rattle could have been /could be?

If you think it could be a pulley I would go out and get a mechanic's scope. It looks like a stethescope that a doctor would use but it has a long metal rod on the end. When you put this on different parts of the engine you can isolate sounds inside the engine.

Pulleys when they fail though, usually make a squeek. I only ever had one that rattled and it was on a 5.0L ford with an airpump for emissions. Any rattiling would lead me to believe it's failure of that accessory. I'm not familiar with your motor though so i dont know what it has for accessories and pullies.

Welcome to the forum.

I've heard tensioner pulleys rattle when bad. Pull the serpentine belt and check the idler pulley, tensioner, waterpump etc, for bad bearings. Easy enough to eliminate a lot of possibilities.

Thanks for the advice chaps

I have booked it into the garage on the 2nd, thanks for the advice,
;)Cheers Bollins
