Turbocharging my 1996 5.0L 2wd 4 door

From what I've seen, most high power cars have turbos. There are several Nissan Skylines running around England with over 1000 hp at the wheels. Not bad for a little V6.

Okay I'm a little confused here by a comment made above about the lightning w/ a s/c versus a t/c. How is it possible that the sc makes less hp at a higher boost while the tc makes more hp at a lower boost? that doesn't make any sense to me. They both work on pressurizing more air to send into the system. Plus, the tc is a blockage in the exhaust system, therefore leading to even less hp. The way I saw it, the advantage of a tc over a sc was the AMOUNT of boost it could make. such as for a miata. Jackson racing superchargers gave i think as much as 8 lbs of boost whereas an fmII turbo gave up to 14 lbs. somebody help me if im all screwed up!!!

Here's what I think I know. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

In general, turbos are capable of producing more boost than a SC. I think it's just a matter of mechanincal design. A supercharger will produce more power down low in the rpms, as it's belt driven and is up to speed instantly. This does not apply to centriufugal superchargers which build up like a turbo, hence they both build up power gradually until full boost comes at a higher rpm. Also, a supercharger will directly rob power fromt he engine to turn the gears, but this is obviously offest by the power gained. However, the maximum power gained is decreased by this amount, so a t full boost will give less power than a turbo. The turbo sucks minimal power by using the exhaust gas.

I know there isn't much detail here. Someone fill in the details or correct what I missed.

Actually, Skylines are actually inline 6's

But anyways... Turbos offer a more adjustable, more efficient method of forced induction. The issue of exhaust backpressure and lag is solved through proper turbo sizing. The wheel that the exhast gases spin is what has the most effect onthe backpressure/lag. A very small wheel gives no lag, but high backpressure (which also produces a lot of heat), whereas a very large wheel will spool only at high RPMs, creating a lot of lag, but no backpressure. It is much harder to find the perfect turbo for your car than to get a supercharger and bolt it up with the pulley of your choice. The proper turbo will have no parasitic loss of power (unlike a superchrger). The "lag" experienced by a turbo is actually the feeling you get with no boost (i.e. what the car would feel like if it had no turbo at all)
OK, I'm rambling now. I just love turbos.

Yeah, there is something sort of magical about turbos.

Yes I know, was thinking of my own "super-powerful" Explorer's V6 and just got confused... Brain thinking one thing and hands doing something else.

BTW, for anyone with an extra $95,000 try this website:

Skylines now available in the US!

you bring me your explorer and i will put almost anything you want in it. it just takes a lot of money to do stuff right. if you want put a cummins motor in it and it can go 12's or 11's while getting awsome millege and towing.

I agree with that, people knock diesals for being slow and not high-reving, but they forget that an diesal engine (especially the Ford PowerStroke) can be easily upgraded to produce an insane amount of torque. The guy across from us has an Excursion w/ the powerstroke engine. He has the Banks Kit on it, propane injection and some other stuff, all I can say is that truck will pin your ass hard against the seat (and it weighs like twice as much as our Explorers:eek: ) It tows his 38ft Cigarrette like its not even behind it. I also used to have a video of F-250's and F-350's running in the 12's and 13's and they were killing any vehicle they they ran against, they launched hard as hell!

Off-Topic: When he was getting some work done at his house we let him keep the Cigarrette on part of our dock (our boat and waverunners were on lifts). I went out with him on it, damn that was one fast boat. It had twin 502's that were supercharged (prochargers I think), I know most people think 100+ isn't special in a car, but when your in a boat doing 110-120mph it's damn fast, feels like your going 200 with the wind. He had harnesses on the seat otherwise the wind woulda have sucked you out and that woulda sucked hitting the water at that speed;) . Oh if you think our trucks our guzzlers, you can watch the fuel needle drop on his boat and he has like a 300 gallon gas tank, thats a nice fill up.

Yea, out on Labor Day weekend at Lake Travis, they were filming the HBO series "real sex". Anywho, all the big timers were out and there was a 46' Fountain with Quad-502s. It had a top speed of over 100 mph and had a fuel tank that was 450 gallons.

Needless to say, the guy had some money under his belt.

I live on the lake, i wakeboard and such, and i notice all the big boats.

Largest boat ever on lake travis was a 54' Fountain that cost the guy about $600 to fill it up from empty. The boat cost him about a mill.

"Real Sex" = freaky and crazy:confused:

I almost broke my back this summer WakeBoarding, I took a nasty wipeout, that sucked big time, actually my mom called the chiropractor for this week cause it still hurts a little. We used to have a Formula race boat (really my grandfathers) with triple 502's N/A and it was fast as hell and had a big appetite for fuel but it was a lot heavier than the 38ft Cigarrette, it plowed through the water no matter how choppy it was unlike the Cigarrette which was air-borne the whole time, scared the **** out of me when you get air-borne at 110 and come down, gotta love that harness;)

i was at the Mopar Show and there was a standard cab dakota witha 5.9 Cummins conversion and it ran a 12.31 @101. It was fast as hell, there were a few duallies there that were runnin 1500 Ft/Lbs of torque, they were bad as hell. Needless to say, they had some CRAZY burnouts.

Yep, gotta rmember it's the torque that gets you off the line. I've seen souped up F-350 diesel, and it was insanely quick. Diesel definitely does not mean slow.
