Honestly, i wouldn't ruin a perfectly good 2 wheel drive explorer by making it a poser truck. if you really want an offroad capable rig, sell it and buy a 4x4 one (even if its an older model) you'll be way better off ($ wise and everything else) than trying to modify you're 2 wheel truck. if you mod you're 2 wheel truck with 4 wheel stuff (like bumpers, lifts, big tires etc) you're just going to make it look stupid, lower its value, and get crappy gas mileage, while still being less capable off-road than a bone stock 4x4 version.

sorry to be such a party pooper, I just don't want anybody to waste their time and money on something they will regret.

I think your understanding of "off road" is a bit limited, its not always about 4wd.

A 2 wheel drive "off road truck" with big tires, etc..:

true story, "offroad" doesnt just mean muddin' or crawlin' some of the best desert trucks are 2 wheel drive and will do anything a 4wd will do in the same sitaution. ive found that outside the southwest (so cal, arizona, new mexico, nevada) you have to have 4 wheel drive to be an "offroad" truck. pretty southern (redneck) way of thinking

You, you could go with lift springs in the back or SOA and put lift spindles in the front and do a torsion twist to get some height and put bigger tires on it like 33's.

If you are going to off road your truck you should seriously look at a locker for the rear. That alone would really help you out. Hmm. Second thought, a winch wouldn't be a bad idea either.

lift spindles, torsion twist and a decent shock up front will do pretty darn good, along with extended rear shackles and a decent shock in the rear as well.

Ok, ok.. you guys have a good point, there are many off-road vehicles, such as that go-fast buggy, which are two wheel drive. so my question for the op (if he's still reading this thread) is, what kind of use do you want for the truck? if it's to be a go-fast truck, then i'd say dont lift it TOO much or it'll be top heavy, and don't run tires larger than will fit into the fenders at full squish. also, big heavy tires add a lot of unsprung weight which won't help for go-fast. i'd even be inclined to run two different size tires, bigger in the rear and smaller in the front, say, 33's and 31's, or 32's and 30's (i know, odd sizes) just a thought.

oh yeah, and x2 for the torsion twist for some cheap suspension lift
