****ty gas mileage on a 4.0 sohc??

my sport get like 10.25 miles per gallon driving around this sucks so much i do have a decently heavy foot but definatly not flooring it all the time..

on the high way i got about 19 miles per gallon.

what can i do to help
and
also i find that when climbing hills on the high way or just accelerating up a hill it seens to die out alot and not wanna accelerat like 3rd gear is crazy slow.
i've got an automatic.
k&n and newerplugs like 7000 miles on them.
it's got 125000 miles and is a 98 sport.

any info to help this would be awesome.
next tank i'm gonna take it easy as hell and idle around everywhere. to see what mileage it gives me then..

Same thing here, I think it is just aggressive driving causing it. That and gearing and tires can affect your MPG. Test a few times, I think this time I am going to come out at like 12mpg city where last time it was like 10.2.

I wrote this another tread and no one cared but here goes anyway. I just recently fitted a Fitch Fuel Catalyst to my machine and I am just about at the end of the run in period (takes about 800kms or 500miles). I have already seen an increase of about 50km (30miles) from the tank and still have bit over a quarter to go. It also gave a slight increase in power.

I have never heard of a fitch fuel catalyst...how does it work exactly?

The SOHC just seems to be a very gas-guzzling engine. I think it's the price we pay for having a V-6 that likes to rev

Plus on full revving it just FLOODS the engine with gas, which is why it smells like fresh gas if you get out after just revving fast for a bit... I suspect that is a good way to burn alot of gas quick...

Thats why all you 4drs should have gotten the 5.0 , but no..."I'll get the V6 b/c it uses less gas and gets better mpg" hehe, then it ends up like on that gas thread 99% of us 5.0 guys get way better mileage the the V6 guys.

My sister just got a 2001 Explorer XLT with the sohc V6 for her 19th b-day. So far, it only gets about 14mpg or so and hers has the "45" option which I think is 3.55 gears. Weird, I thought it was rare to see 3.55 on the sohc especially on a fully loaded with every option except 4wd and the 5.0 like hers.

My moms 2000 5.0 Mounty on the other hand (2wd and 3.73 gears) got 15.7 mpg filling up with all hard city driving. She and I always take off aggressively and have lead foots. Showed an 02-03 (new body style) Civic what torque is about today , off the line I slaughtered the kid and pulled away to about 65mph where I let off with him all the way behind and then punk azz did a ricer fly by at at least 80mph with hazards flashing and slowed down some and took a screeching right hand turn....moron's lucky he didn't lose control, when they do that you know you hurt their pride

But anywayz, doing that, I still get good mileage . The times that I have actually tried to drive conservatively, mileage dropped big time to between 13-14mpg, just drive harder.

The catalyst works by changing the structure of the fuel as it passes through it. It is able to break down the impurities in the fuel and make it burn more efficently giving more power. As long as you don't use that extra power (heavy foot) you will save fuel. It raises the octane of the petrol or lowers it for diesel and even works on LPG. With the catalyst fitted the engine burns almost all of the fuel leaving minimal to no deposits in the oil and lowers emissions. This then leads to increased engine life as the oil tends not blacken from the sought and so only pure oil gets circulated in the motor. Be serious you been had big time!
Sorry to say but that **** never gonna work, its like that lead tablets that you shuld put in the tank, in the seventees- eightees to improve gas quality it does not work.
You can compare it to "sugarpills" instead of real medicine for you self, if you belive it the result comes! very nice scam tho, looks very serious but no really proof that it will work, only lots of comparison and insurance of thats been tested with great results by independent testers, but no test results in writing, Hmm strange, how come? ¨
Nice touch with the breaking in thing i'll bet you drive more carefully now (maybe without thinking about it) and look on the tank gauge more often than before and Voila!! better gas milage!!

Actually I don't drive any differently then before and I always watch the fuel gauge even before it was put in. How can you tell me it doesn't work when you obviously don't have one? Come and see me when you have one smartarse!

Well i love to visit you but i never gonna get any Catalyst.
And i dont se the point spending lots of $ on an can of metal with only the insurance from the producers "exellent testresult" with nothing to back it up, like a independent testburo something similar to NTHSA, EuroNcap or whatever.
And for yourself then, what mpg did you have before and what do you have now? You only say you increased it, to what?
I dont have one and i went from crappy 12mpg when i bougt it to 21mpg when i learnd how to drive it.
I usually get around 17-19mpg regular driving and i had it to 20mpg in -30C (-26F) and getting so much more mpg than that i dont think im capabel of (I just have to floor it sometimes) and i dont drive that much steady freeways so.. i have about 33000 mile on it now and i have never done a thing abut the X exept regular service by the book, so i dont think either plugs or filters are changed ever, so if i do that maybe i could get even better mpg who knows, but i havent come around yet.

There's also a big difference in mileage between the 4 wheel drive trucks and the 2 wheel drive wagons. No useful info here - just offering what mileage you get. Lefy, are you 2 or 4 wheel drive? Is it tuned up? Did you try that MAF sensor cleaining trick? Some people say it helps mileage, I didn't notice an improvement. My mileage went down from by a few MPG's but the weather here in Wisconsin dropped from the mid 30's to the teens so I think that has something to do with it.

When the temp drops you're gonna use more fuel because the computer needs to give more gas to the motor with the denser air. You should also feel more power in colder weather.

my trucks a 4x4 awd deal and i really don't know about how tuned up it is but. it runs decnetly starts fine. but lately it has been cold out around here.. like 15 degrees is the high for the past two weeks. with lows near 0 and crazy windchill. newyork weather

the maf is the mass airflow sensor?? yes and thats in the intake tube right after the filter right.
how would i clean using what??
and how would drilling the air box help the mileage.??
and i think a high flow exhaust would help alot too.
right.

Don't forget we got that lovely oxygenated gas now. My MPG drops 1-2 every October thru April..... The cold here makes it worse as was said. Your Fuel Pressure Regulator may also be starting to wear, especially after 125K.
