when im gasing going over say 25-30 or faster, i hear a pinging/knocking/rattling noise. last week i heard it, and my exhaust bolt before the muffler needed to be tightened.. but now thats not it. its the same noise i heard in my sisters navajo a couple weeks ago. nothing is running bad, just that sound. and it wont just stay there, or get faster or slower sounding.

the last couple of weeks i had the same thing going on but i think i figured it out...
one of the small hoses in the engine compartment had melted through.
after replacing the hose last night i havent heard anything .
anyway its the small hose that comes up from the manifold and into a small black thing with a couple of wires hooked up to it on the drivers side of the engine

hope this helps

Would the black thing be the MAF. I've got a KKM and those hoses are not used anymore or something and I get pinging throughout most of the RPM range unless I'm coasting. I'm also running 89 octane and it doesn't help much. I would love to figure this out.

Hey Boats,
did you check for loose cat. covers?

Byrd,
The hose you are talking about was used to bring warm air into the intake when you start up cold. i do not think it has anything to do with your pinging sound. Are you sure it is a pinging sound and not a whistling? i thought i had a ping or whistle, but found out it was just air hissing thrugh my intake.

You know this is going to be the STUPEDEST question i have ever asked on here. But when poeple talk about PING does it really sound like PING PING PING or does it sound like the lifters are going to shoot through the value covers?

When i really GAS it and i get from 3500 RPM-5000 i get that lifter getting ready to shoot through the valve covers noise. I have tried running 92 Oct and it doesn't help. Any ideas?

Also BoatsRCool i am sorry for asking questions in your thred, i just didnt see a need to start something all new for basicly the same question.

commocozy,
I will have to check mine, but I think noise when your really pushing it that hard is...normal? If not then I would change oils you use. What do you use? I will go out there today and floor my truck see if I can hear any lifter noises.

Two items that may alleviate your pinging problem are AMSOIL Power Foam and Performance Improver (PI).

The Power Foam cleans the entire combustion intake system for improved engine performance. Removes gum, varnish and carbon deposits for better fuel economy and improved overall engine performance. Cleans intake valves, intake manifolds and throttle plates to keep the combustion intake system running at peak efficiency.

PI dissolves and removes fuel system deposits and other contaminants for improved power and overall performance in gasoline engines. Reduces PCV and EGR system deposits. Reduces exhaust emissions (tests show up to 90 percent reduction). Improves engine idle, response and starting. An initial clean-up dose of six ounces for ten gallons of gasoline restores up to 95 percent of an injector's original fuel flow. Periodic maintenance doses of one ounce for ten gallons of gasoline keep injectors and other fuel system components clean.

I have used both of these religiously in both of my vehicles with fantastic results. The performance improvement after using Power Foam is amazing.

i have gotten the same thing when i hammer it down on the highway and i get in the upper rpm's. i don't think that i have been able to duplicate it at slower speeds. i had been wondering if it is some kind of combustion problem. hopefully someone with more mechanical experience than i will reply to this post.

AgEx, regarding the system cleaning, do you do this yourself or at a garage? Where and how can we have this done.

I tried everything. Running high octane gas, wires, synthetic oil, etc. The only thing that will solve it is to remove the octane bar by the battery. It will retard your timing by 3 degrees, so you won't get as good of performance, but I could hardly notice a difference.

Have you tried cleaning the MAS?? If not, see if that makes a difference.

Travis-

I am running Mobil one, i have had it in there since 50,000 and i now have 75,000. I don't think it is the oil. It drives me crazy i get worried think it is going to BLOW up. Feel like a retard asking that question. cause i can do pretty much anything i need to on the X. But had no idea what PING sounded like :-)

i was also always confused about the 'ping'.

Commocozy,
Do you have the SOHC engine with the faulty chain tensioners?
If not some things I would check are:
-fuel filter
-TB for carbon buildup
-air cleaner
-any vaccuum lines which may be dislodged
-try a premium fuel such as 93 octane amoco
I thought mine had a ping, but it was just a normal air rushing sound. i had to pay ford to tell me that.

One thing that you could check is for deposits on the #5 spark plug. The first generation X seams to have a problem with coolant/oil being sucked into that cylinder.
This causes a lean condition and resulting ping.
If you notice any deposits on that plug, the fix may be to retorque the lower intake manifold to specs. The bolts loosen up over time.
I had chased the spark knock for about 2 years. Also thought that the rear main was leaking. Last October I pulled the upper manifold, found the lower bolts were very loose and excessive oil behind the lower manifold.
One year later, I have not had any ping, eliminated the oil leak and have only used 87 octane fuel.
Total cost of repair was 6 or 7 bucks for an upper gasket from ford and 3 to 4 hours of my time.
Sorry for rambling on, but anyone with a 91 to 94 X that experiences ping, excessive oil consumption/leaks and coolant lose should check #5 spark plug for deposits.
This worked for me and I found out about it right here.

Rattle, rattle, thunder, clatter, boom, boom, boom, don't worry call the CARx man!

The Power Foam is a do-it-yourself project. Just pull the intake hose off the throttle body and spray in the Power Foam with the engine idling high (1200-1500 RPM). You may want someone controlling the gas pedal while doing this. Let is sit for 30 minutes and then drive it, preferably at highway speed for 15 (or more) minutes. The plume of blue smoke from the tailpipe is just the Power Foam doing its job.

The PI is added to the gas tank. Usually one bottle to a tank of gas for the initial dose and 1 ounce to 10 gallon when you refuel.

Please feel free to e-mail if you have any further questions.

Well, how hard is it to pull the upper manifold off? I have looked at it before and couldn't figure out how it came off. Thanks

You said "spray in the Power Foam with the engine idling high(1200-1500rpm)," how long do you do this before letting it sit for 30 minutes?
