Should I start pricing tranny rebuilds now or do I have some time?

A few days ago I started to get the infamous 2-3 transmission flare in my '02 4.6L. It seems to happen about once per day for now. And it has only happened during hard accelerations.

I have read through some of the tranny threads, but I am not clear how much time this tranny might have left in it? Does anyone know how much time I might have left until failure? Is it totally random? Besides the occasional flare the tranny seems to operate quite well.

Thanks for any help.

The band is probably ready to break. The tabs where the servo piston rides become loose and eventually break off or the servo piston is ready to break also.

What band? The issue is probably the solenoid pack. Replace that, and the problem should go away.

Can someone xplain what the "flare " is?

This same thing just happened to me this morning for the first time ever. The 2-3 flare happened twice while engine/tranny was still cold. Once it warmed up, it didn't do it again all day. She has 173,000 miles, and she is starting to worry me.

I have already had the rough downshift to 3rd when accelerating at highway speeds for some time. It downshifts with a hard thud. It has been doing that since about 100,000 miles and hasn't gotten any worse through the years.

I will be putting in a new solenoid pack, fluid drain/refill, and a new filter soon.

So I was watching the RPMs today... at the end of second the truck needs to have a "push" to get it to shift. I have the 5R55S.

At what miles, on average, do people see this problem start happening?

Mark

I don't know when on my truck but I know since the day I bought it @ 60k miles its been doing it
