My 1997 XLT gets very warm inside; and that it even with everything turned off. In addition; when I turn the AC on it only gets slightly cool if I set it to max cool.

Could this be a blend door problem or am I looking at a combination of problems? I'd like to get it fixed before summer really sets in but, don't want to spend a fortune either.

Sounds like the door. I believe the heater core still has flow even when the switch is OFF, except when on max AC there is a bypass valve. But that door needs to work to keep the hot air from coming in. If you can do the labor, the door can be replaced for around thirty dollars.

Is there just one blend door and, if so, is it something that requires the removal of the entire dash?

Max A/C bypasses the blend door issue. If your A/C isn't cold on max, you may need a refrigerant recharge. If you have no control over the air delivery temp on any other setting, then the blend door is most likely broken.

I will check into having the blend door repaired; I'm sure it won;t be cheap. As far as the AC is concerned; I have had it charged but, it only gets cold on max AC. I guess I'll take care of one thing at a time for now.
