I just bought a 2000 ford Explorer sport and have a few questions.

1. I have a couple of noises i can't tell what they are.
a) a slight sqweak squeak like the S belt or tensioner. (intermitent)
b) sometimes when I stop at a light or stop sign the air intake whines really loud. It stops when I give it gas.

2. How can I tell if I have the SOHC 4.0?

Thanks for any help.

Your squeak is likely a tensioner. The intake whine is a dirty or faulty IAC sensor. They run around $50. Some can be opened and cleaned and some are nonservicable. I think the sohc says SOHC on the plastic intake cover, and the OHV has 4.0, but that might very well be wrong.

The intake whine you refer to, is it almost a loud "drone" or hum?

The OHV engine has a 90 degree bend in the intake tube, the SOHC has a less severe curve in it and should say SOHC on the top.

Humm

I guess it could be called a hum. It sound like it is coming from where the air cleaner is...

It doesn't matter what it sounds like. If it's coming from the air cleaner, and goes away when when you give it gas, you need to buy an IAC valve. Eventually the car will stall when it gets bad enough.
