1998 ford explorer 4x4
i finally was able to take my explorer in the mud since doing the sas. it has 4.56 gears with 35" tires which are actually only 34" tall. and was sorely dissapointed. in 4 low i can't spin the tires fast enough to clean the tread. so i get stuck. so no big deal i jus put it in 4 high. no power what so ever. pedal goes to the floor and nothing happens. even with it in first gear i can't spin my tires in the mud. so i try it again with some speed built up. with the rpms already up to about 3000. i hit the mud and it loses all power and won't spin the tires. pedal goes to the floor but nothing happens. this is all in 4 high. is the motor which is the 4.0 ohv jus that under powered? to where i can't drive through thick mud in 4 high? or is something wrong. i was getting really loud humming from under the hood and i have a check engine light on. but also don't have the ring gear in the rear end that lets the engine read the speedometer and odometer. leaving this out also got rid of my rev limiter could this be effecting my power? i also got a new used maf for it as with mine u could beat on it and change the way the vehicle idled. could it cause this? power seems no different with the new maf but have not tried it in the mud yet as i had to buy a new transfer case also since mine crapped out on me... and need a new driveshaft to complete the manual tc swap. am i stuck buying power mods to help this or is something wrong? any help would be appreciated.

c'mon i know there are people with 4.56's and 35's... or any body for that matter... hows yer power in 4 high in the mud... cuz i'm having major problems with it. do i need power mods cuz my motor isn't strong enough... is that jus the way it is or is something wrong? i DO have a check engine light but was told it was caused by not having the ring gear thing in the rearend for (speedometer and odometer) and when i got the codes read thats all that shows up is that it doesn't have that or that it needs fixing. can that throw off the computer and how it runs? i'm jus curious about wether or not it is normal to have ZERO power in 4 high when in some good mud. PLEASE someone help me out on this.

That's wierd. Because according to all the OHV "lovers" on this board the OHV is supposed to have more low end torque then my SOHC. but i have 4.10's and 35's and was able to make a steep/difficult climb where more often than not only one tire had good traction at a time.

you're has to be very underpowered to not be able to spin them in 4low...

You might want to check out why your check engine light is on.

Mud is thick and if you are in it past your grille you'd need a ton of power to pull thru.
But there's probably more wrong with the truck's running condition than just not having the ring gear in the rear end. The OHV ought ta pull through mud with 4.56's, unless you're just buried in it. Sounds like you have some kind of mongrel MAF, not all mafs are calibrated the same, even among OHV engined Explorers.

GOOD! thats what i wanted to hear... now its a matter of finding out whats causing it. i do have a new/used maf on it. so for all i know that fixed my problem right there. on the street i noticed no performance increase but it always seemed fine on road. i have no front driveshaft so i haven't been able to get it in the mud. also when i was in the mud after i would pass 3000rpm's it would howl very loudly. i drop it back below that and it would stop. so i cleaned my iac yesterday. i figured what the hay. it won't hurt nothing. maybe it'll help. then it wouldn't stop howling at all. so the only way i could get it to shut up was to completely remove that black cap on there. so i assume i now need one of those. anyways thanks for the responses.

did u disconnect the negative battery terminal for a half hour so that the ECC could "learn" your new MAF?

So, is there a front driveshaft in the vehicle now?

I am working on a theory..................

i DID disconnect the battery for it to reset itself after the new maf was put on (only for like 20 min not 30) as of now there is no front driveshaft, b/c my old transfer case crapped out the first time i got to play with it and the manual 1354 that i have now which is in and ready to go...takes a different driveshaft which i have but it needs to be lengthened still. and the closest place to do it is a ways off from me. and i work 8 to 6 mon-fri which are the hours of the place i need to take it. sooo... i need to get away from work to do it. which i plan on doing within 2 weeks max. ...didn't do all this work jus to drive it on the street. :(
