on my 2000 4x4 xlt explorer i have just replaced on both sides wheel hubs/bearings and cv drive shafts and still have a noise similar to aggressive tread on a paved road. however this is not a tire noise.
Can any of those experts out there advice on what i should be looking for now!

thanks

how can you be sure its not tire noise??are you sure your not locked in 4wheel drive?

not tire noise, makes this sound while driving slowly on dirt or lawn

drop the front driveshaft, that will isolate the front end from the t-case. put the rear up on jack stands and see if it makes the noise in 2wd, 4wd, ect. If not then its front end related. If it does make the noise then its not.

thanks for this tip, on my old 93 explorer i had a noise in the front & after much expense a friend suggested we put the rig on jackstands & run it, turns out a rear wheel bearing was the culprit - will try your suggestion on the2000- thanks

Good idea- we've diagnosed many the tough noise by propping vehicles up on 4 jackstands and letting someone else drive/brake/steer while we listen underneath.

Just please, please, please make sure you have good jackstands in the proper places... :)

When I had a similar problem the T-case was locked up. I changed the fluid, made a lot of back and forth hard turns at relatively low speeds. I heard a loud pop as it freed up. Then I changed the fluid again. Good luck.

well, thanks for all the tips, will check transfer case lubricant & try putting rig on jackstands tomorrow - wish me luck-i'll let you know the outcome
