I have a 94 explorer, V6. There is a sensor screwed into the intake manifold on the drivers side in front of the vacuum tree at the back; kind of behind the EGR valve. What is this sensor? Couldn't find it in the Haynes manual nor here (although I did find lots of other good stuff here).
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere.

Thanks

welcome to the forum!!

I am going off of memory here since I don't have my 95 ranger anymore with the OHV motor. But If I recall there is the IAC and the DPFE, is there a vacuum line coming from it to the EGR tube?

Welcome to this forum! I'm not sure which area on the engine you are referring to, but if it's on the upper part, then it is probably the ACTS. If it's on the lower part, then it's probably the ECTS or another sensor for a gauge (oil or temperature). A picture would help if possible.

Thanks for the warm welcome to this forum!
I am new to this posting thing so I haven't figured out how to post a picture yet, but BrooklynBay is right; a picture would be worth 1000 words. I'll try working on that this weekend, but in the meantime maybe I can explain it better:
Looking at the upper intake manifold, on the driver's side right after the throttle body is the IAC and DFPE (the DFPE is just attached to the manifold structure). A little farther on is a bracket holding the throttle cable, then the mystery sensor. Geographically it is above the EGR vacuum solenoid. It screws into the manifold (i.e., senses something inside the manifold) and has an electrical connector with 2 wires. That's the best I can do until I learn how to post pictures.

Thanks again.

It might be the DPFE sensor. Check this link for more information: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164517. Does it look like this:

I don't know when Ford started putting the IAT Intake Air Temperature (BrooklynBay referred to it as the ACTS Air Charge Temperature Sensor) Sensor in the tube, but on my '92 the IAT is in the drivers side of the upper intake, just forward of the vacuum tree/PCV valve and just aft of the IAC motor. It would be a two wire sensor, and a wiring diagram should be able to tell you what the wire colors should be if it is the IAT.

Thanks BrooklynBay & Mr Shorty! I didn't recognize the acronym ACTS. So its an air temp sensor; the last picture looks about right (although I didn't take it out). My Haynes manual has a picture of the 4L SOHC and the V8 with the IAT and other sensors labled, but not the 4L OHV. Go figure - this was more than mildly annoying! I am glad to have found this forum!

The reason I was wondering about this sensor is that my Explorer has been running very poorly (pings - its actually more like a rattle) when its hot and under load at highway speeds so I was checking and cleaning various things per suggestions in various "pinging" threads here and the manual.

Is there anything special I need to know when removing and cleaning it? Should I use thread sealer or anti-sieze compound or some such thing?

Thanks again!
