2006 Explorer Eddie Bauer
I have 2006 Explorer 4.0 v6 Eddie Bauer. About 135k miles. I want it to last and it is in good working condition. But routine maintenance (except for oil changes, air and oil filters and tires) has not been done. Tranny was repaired under warranty at 70k miles. Radiator was replaced under warranty at about 50k. I recently replace the thermostat housing. But that's it. I imagine that spark plugs and lower ball joints are going to need attention soon based on the miles. But I am curious what else I should be doing. My goal is to make a list of maintenance items and prioritize them over the next 6-9 months. I just don't know where to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Definitely replace the brake fluid asap. After two years, three at most, it has attracted water and loses its hydraulic ability...mushy, dangerous braking.

Rear diff service and front if 4x4 also transfer case as well. I would do a transmission service no flush drop pan replace filter and fluid do not do any flushes I would drain the powersteering fluid and add new fluid spark plugs wires and fuel filter. Check condition of coolant might need a drain and refill. And do a visual for play and leaks. Lube any joints that can be lube shafts linkage and steering components if possible. Check condition of brakes and tires. There could be a ton more I'm not listing however this is what I would do I just did majority of this to my 08 because I want it to be semi maintance free for next 100 miles in therory

Belt
tensioner
radiator flush
change tranny fluid and filter
control arms
spark plug and wires
replace bypass hose from thermostat
fuel filter (add techtron injection cleaner to gas tank before replacing)

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll post as I work on the vehicle.

My 06 is at 138K miles. Here's what's had to be done to mine, so some of these you might want to keep in mind:

Radiator replaced at 28K and 80K.
Thermostat Housing (I have to replace this almost every 18 mos)
Transmission rebuilt (if it jerks going into reverse, get it looked at NOW)
Front Wheel bearings replaced
Belt & Tensioner replaced
Spark Plugs replaced
Battery Replaced
Rear AC leaky lines repaired
Head unit (6-cd changer) died. Had to replace that (also improved sound.)
Brakes (new pads, resurface rotors, change out the fluid)

I also have a Tire Sensor error, but neither the time nor inclination to play bad sensor bingo.

I think that's it. Repairs aside, I still love it. It's like driving a cloud.
