Building my '79 Ranchero, using ex-police car 5.0L HO and AOD, I swung the engine and transmission in and out while assembled together. Involved having front of vehicle quite high off ground, and lowering them in/out at a steep angle, ~ 45 degrees. Having to get appropriate mount brackets and supports, ass well as rear crossmember fitted, I probably had the combination in and out of there 4, maybe 5 times.

Has anyone removed/replaced a V-6/5R55S combination in 3rd. Gen Ex. while hooked together? I imagine I would remove Transfer Case first: it would make the whole thing too long to handle easily.

Any ideas would be appreciated! I have a 2004 approaching 160K, and fear timing-chain-'itis will be coming.

if you must. i did that on my 71 442, i removed the radiator and grill and most of the front end of the car to get them out together. i think it was worth it though. less time under the car and easier to reassemble the motor and trans. Had to rebuild the trans too ..

Unless you still have the 442, you seem to have become a "Ford Guy". As those protective bumbers came in vogue, and the front of the cars increased in length by a foot, I remember laying on a strip of plywood on my belly, to get at those damned rear-mounted distributors! My boss years later, an M.E., told me if you want consistent unchanging ignition timing, you want the distributor up front. Camshaft "wind-up" causes variation in timing with back mount. Camshaft is like a twisted spring. Not much, but the guy built race cars........imp

only the memory ...been driving Fords for about 25 years, and never own a foreign car..and wish i could get some of those yesteryear cars back now...
