I'm currently driving a 2003 Escape XLS and want to upgrade to an Explorer next year. My reasons for wanting to upgrade are that the Explorer has full 4WD (not just AWD), is quieter and has better suspension. I'm wondering if someone can advise me on what the best model years are in terms of build-quality/reliability, as well as which models have the full 4WD feature, which I understand was later replaced with an auto-engage AWD system.
