I've been wanting to install a secondary tranny filter and while browsing threw parts store I got this idea of using a fuel filter for the tranny. It would be much cheaper and very simple to install. My only concern would be if a fuel filter could handle it in term of getting clogged but it could be easily changed at every oil change interval. Any thoughts from the experts?

The viscosity of the fluid that goes through a fuel filter is way too low (thinner) compared to motor oil

A fuel filter is designed to flow high and pass a liquid that is not only thin but contains much smaller HC particles

Oil is not only thicker but also contains larger HC molecules (not to mention any other organic or synthetic additives)

A fuel filter may NOT even allow oil to pass through even if brand new.
It will be clogged almost instantly.

If you want the look and ease of an inline filter, AC Delco (among others) carry magnetic inline transmission filter kits. They look exactly the same (on the outside) as a Ford non-banjo type inline filter. You should be able to adapt this similar to your original idea.

I figured the filter material would be different was just kinda thinking out loud. That magnaflow would be nice but I think I will just go with the oil filter. I can get an external oil filter mount from the shop that we use on the race cars so I will just go that route. Thanks

That's a good choice. I have a B&M spin-on mount that I
plan on installing when the weather warms up a bit.

There's a good sticky about the spin-ons, which I'm sure
you've already read.:)
