I have two questions for the group:

First, I have a 1997 SOHC 4.0, automatic, 4 door xlt AWD explorer which was totaled, and am looking to use the transfer case off of it on my 1998 SOHC 4.0 automatic, 4 door xlt AWD explorer. Are the transfer cases changeable (97 to 98)?

Second, does anyone know of a thread or have step by step procedures on what needs to be pulled to get the transfer case off. I have seen some say part of the cat converter / exhaust has to come off to remove the TC or get the to the top bolts. Others say the carpeting has to be pulled back to get from the inside to a plate that allows you to get to the top bolts.

How difficult it is to pull all 5 bolts to get the TC off?

Any help as always is greatly appreciated.

I forgot add the P/N's off of each Transfer case.

The 97 (off of the tag on the TC) has M0462 4405 08
188763 F77ACA

The 98 (off of the the tag on the TC) has K2272 4405 10
156154 F87ACA

For what its worth, the 97 transfer case is a direct replacement for 98. The only exception is that the 97 has what looks like a speed sensor on the aft end of the TC by the rear drvie shaft end where the 98 has this blanked off. not sure what it is for.

Thanks for all the help

I believe that the speed sensor on your 98 goes to the rear differential, so it is not needed. Just cap the speedometer connection on the 97 transfercase, so it won't leak, and you should be good.

Ditto. They'll physically bolt up. The extra speed sensor on the 97 case won't be used in the 98. IIRC, even the wiring pinout on the connector is identical.
