Ok, after surfing the archives for around 4 hours to try and solve my problem, I need some final assistance.
I have a 97 EB SOHC V6 and the stocker muffler is in need of replacement. I have a commute of 40 minutes to work everyday and I want a low rumble upon highway driving and a nice low idle. I have heard everything from pro-flo, flowmaster, gibson, borla, and so on. I am looking for the best product for the price. If that entails changing the diameter of the pipe, than be it. Specifics of systems would be wonderful.
Any responces will be greatly appreciated.
Chad

I had a local muffler shop put on a Magnaflow muffler and run 2.25" pipe out the stock exit location. It came in under $200. It sounds and performs great! A nice rumble at all speeds, most noticable between 1500 and 2200 RPM. It's quiet on the highway (on the inside), so it doesn't get annoying on long trips. While it doesn't sound like a V8, it has a very nice tone that doesn't sound like a ricer, either.

borla sounds great on my V6. I replaced my stock exhaust with it and I get better gas mileage, lower idle, nice deeper sound...sounds like a low growl, and better throttle response. I only have stock to compare to but my borla is pretty beast.

Flowmaster

I put on a 40 series flowmaster and ran 2and 1/2 out th back I love the flowmaster nohting sounds like it!!

i was thinking of just getting wider pipes, 2.5 inch hopefully, and keeping the stock muffler, anyone know what difference i might notice? better sound?

no pipes

Hey Monochromus,
I would suggest saving the money from the pipes, you said 40 right?, and putting in another 40 and getting an aftermarket muffler, you know which one i think, but any muffler will give you more tone than just larger pipes. The pipes will make a better tone with another muffler but just the pipes alone with the stock exhaust makes hardly any difference, I work at a place where we do lots of exhaust work, from oem replacements to custom duals, and we have had a bunch of people try this and the only thing we noticed a change in was on a Eagle Talon, you could hear the Trubo spooling louder somehow, we are still confused on that one though, well there is my input.
Oh and by the way if you wanna stay cheap just have a glasspack put in, request that the baffles are turned so that they go with the exhaust instead of against it to make it louder yet!!

40's are loud. go with a 50 series deltaflow

No...go with the 40 series....It's loud, but for V-6s, it's not that loud....I love my 40 series and my Explorer is only a year senior of yours, chirochad1...I suggest a Flowmaster 40 series(without Delta-Flow). Just my 2 cents, no disrespect, flyguy....By the way, you got any pics, nick? I wanna see the engine bay of your rig(as well as the exterior).

my engine is blue!!! :) But no pics untill I get my intake tube painted. It looks REAL ghetto with PVC in there... Anyways...I hear the 40 is a real beefy sounding muffler... but the guy said he wants a quiet one... with a low rumble. Thats a 50 series. :) Dont get me wrong... the 50 delta is to pansey... If you gun it... heads turn.

Go with the Flowmaster, it sounds nice but not to loud and not any were near the price of the Borla/Gibson set up. My .02

final question

I have decided to go with the flowmaster 50 series without delta flow. My next question that I have is does anyone have a part number for this and does anybody have any tips on what to use as the exit pipe. My stock one doesn't look to bad. Or do I need to replace it with a different diameter one. Thanks again.

go to the flowmaster web site. I think they have a catalog... but I think I just let my muffler guy provide the muffler and do the work. Cost me $125 for the muffler and pipes.

Get the flomaster cat back 160$ in summit catalog cheaper than a stock system by far and supper easy to install. I have 1 on my 91 xlt. It is the perfect sound for a explorer. It is quiet but notice ible at idle and sounds really good and is fairly loud upon acceleration but not too loud. I noticed a slight midrange power increase but with the rest of the exhaust stock it wont doo much for power. It comes with a 50 series muffler. Dont get a 40 series they are very loud. My frtiend has one on his v6 path finder and it sounds like crap way too loud for a slow nissan.

I have the 50 Flowmaster, and it does sound good, but you don't want to hear on the highway so get the 50. Just get the shop to get the stuff, its so much easyer.
