V6 Exhaust

Not sure if I'm posting in the right section, but does anyone know of an exhaust kit that could go on a v6 explorer? Im looking for something aggresive. I know its a v6, but just wondering if theres an exhaust that will make it sound like a v8 or something.

only one ive ever seen that was a kit was made by gibson. ive replaced my muffler with a glasspack and it sounds real nice, had a dynomax on there before that which sounded good too. no need to spend a bunch of money on a prefabbed system, just cut the old muffler off and bolt up a new one. then you can swap it out easily with other models/brands if you want to change the sound. there is a thread on here with videos of these things with all different exhausts on them, look for that to see what you like.

you literally cut the muffler out and weld a new one on. not really a pic necessary, but

Dynomax, Gibson, and Flowmaster all make bolt-on catback exhaust systems for the Explorer.

Which one sounds more like a V8 is up to you.

The Gibson uses a 2.5" pipe with internal muffler louvres and sounds more ratty, with the BRAPPPP sound on acceleration and when you let off the gas in gear typical of straight-through mufflers and big pipes.

The Dynomax uses 2.25" pipe and has a deep muffled sound. Really nice if you want a performance increase without a ton more noise. Better for low-end torque of the OHV motor than high-end RPM use.

The Flowmaster uses a 50-series SUV muffler and sounds like...a Flowmaster. Good if you like their sound, but the muffler baffling system uses restriction to achieve it, much like an OEM-type muffler.


As pictured, you can also install a muffler of your own choosing, or go to an exhaust shop and have them fabricate something. It's also possible to combine parts (say another brand 2.25" in/out muffler that's similar in size to the Dynomax, but buy the Dynomax rear pipe, and bolt it all on using strap clamps or welding)

Magnaflow makes some pretty good straight-through mufflers, that are a straight through design, and heavy and packed with material so there's a pretty deep and somewhat loud sound to them. They may sound the most like a V8 if you're looking for noise. Otherwise I'd suggest the Dynomax Super Turbo system for a deep sound that's louder than stock, but not as noisy as other mufflers.

i have a magnaflow dual in dual out on my v6 and its nice sounding not as deep as a v8 but not a v6 trying to be something that its not. esp when the insides rusted out it got louder and is very nice. something to think about. you can def hear me coming down the highway when i get on it
 






Ah, okay, thanks! I guess I'll go with the Dynomax Super System. I don't know nothing about exhaust besides the names of the parts but thanks for the help. Now to see how much that thing costs! :P
 






Do you know how to make the muffler exit on the side? As in below the rear door?I got a 4 door xlt.
 






What do you think of the super 44 series?I saw an v6 explorer on youtube with that muffler and it sounded decent.
 






no need to weld, there are clamps and bands and and all kinds of stuff to do it "bolt on" style. you cut off the old muffler, get the new muffler, then either hook it back up to the rest of the stock exhaust or you could find a way to run the exhaust off the side if thats what you want. i suggest hittin up a JEGS or some type of place around you that sells exhaust parts. you will for sure change your mind with all the options available in front of you to see and think about.
 






If you want to make the exhaust exit under the rear door, get a muffler instead of a catback kit, and have an exhaust shop bend up the rear pipe to exit from the muffler to the rear door. You can also have them weld up a single or dual tip for you, depending on how you want it to look.

The exhaust will also be louder with the shorter piping.

If you want a loud Flowmaster, you'll want a 40 series rather than the 44 series.

I would suggest a Magnaflow or Dynomax instead, but if you make it to an exhaust shop and hear some Flowmasters and decide that's what you want, there you go.
 






yep 40 is louder than the 44 and JEGS has some pretty sweet side pipes if that's what you're looking for. http://www.jegs.com/i/Hooker+Headers/520/50735-1/10002/-1

I would definitely look at getting the resonator and/or cats cut out because I have an 02 v6 explorer with the 40 series and I don't think it is living up to its potential, because the resonator/cats are still on it, although I think the problem is particularly with the resonator.
