Just got a very nice 93' XLT about a month ago and got the Haynes repair guide to help me along the common stuff, anyways my engine is a V6 Pushrod is that the same as a SOHC? if not what is the difference. Then again Im going by the book and its a pushrod I just dont know what a pushrod engine is? Also I want to get a new exhaust for my explorer and everyone has been talking about the 50 by flowmaster.. and there is on in the Jegs catalog for 169 for the Force Two. Anybody think that would be a nice little exhaust for my X?

you have a 4.0 ohv (overhead valve) engine it is different from the sohc (single overhead cam) as far as the exhaust force 2 will be a mild change from stock....

Anything really different about them.... or r they basically the same... Im looking for a exhaust that is a little bit louder.

The 50 series, which comes in the Force II kit, will be a little louder than stock. I have it on my truck, it sounds great. I didn't want anything too loud, and this did the truck. It's got a great low, mellow rumble to it. Also noticed better acceleration and throttle response. Hope this helped.

The OHV and SOHC are very different. In your engine, the OHV, the cam is in the middle of the engine towards the bottom. Lifters/pushrods ride the cam and open the valves. In a SOHC engine the cam is on top of the engine. It rides the valves directly.

Hi silvermelon19:

OHV - overhead valve. Another way of saying pushrod engine. A single camshaft is located in the engine block and drives all of the valves through pushrods and rocker arms.

SOHC - single overhead cam. Each cylinder head has it's own camshaft that directly actuates the valves. This greatly reduces valvetrain mass and allows higher engine speed without valve float.

So, the block, heads, cam drivetrain, and probably a bunch of other parts are different. As far as sizing the exhaust goes, they're both 4.0L engines, so it matters little. The only real difference is the SOHC will rev a little more so it will benefit more from a free-flowing exhaust than an OHV. Hope this helped.

Regards,
John.
