This is a question for all you guys out there with V8's in your Ranger/Explorer.

What are you getting gas mileage wise with the EFI 5.0L V8 ???

ARE the Newer (1989+) 5.0L's a reliable 200K+ mileage motor? (if not used for offroading) :)

I usually get from 14-16 mpg - that's a little highway and the rest windy New Hampshire roads. I've got 133,000 miles and it's still runnind strong :)

Thanks for the reply! I should be more clear as to my question though... I was more interested in the in hearing results form 91-94 X's with V8 conversions. (96+ V8 X's are welcome to reply too!)

I've been lead to believe that gas mileage will improve slightly over the V6, if all the other mods stay the same. :smoke:

I don't have a 91-94 but I'll tell you my stats because the mpg should be the same. I get 16 in the city and 19 on a highway trip. I average 17-18. The 302 should be a reliable motor for at least 200,000 to 300,000 miles. My father in law has a 86 Bronco 302 whith 385,000 miles! It still runs good and it doesn't smoke.

I have a Ranger with the 5.0L, '92 vintage, C-4 Trans, 3.73 gears.
The Ranger does not weight as much as the over-weight "X" or Navajo but I get around 20 on the hy-way, not sure around town, never checked.

If you want the power you have to pay the price. It takes gas to make horse power, more horsepower more gas. The lighter the vehicle the more gas mileage.
So compute it yourself, the "X" weights too much to start, so you should not get the same mileage as a Ranger.

Good Luck, and if you are looking at only the gas mileage don't do the swap.

No I am not doing this swap just for gas mileage. Although, I will be keeping the motor completely stock, and the Explorer kept on road (with stock tires & AOD Overdrive). My #1 goal of the project is to make a reliable truck that has the power......if I ever need it...... :)

Good Luck, and if you are looking at only the gas mileage don't do the swap.

The V6 only gets 1 or 2 mpg more and if you are towing a heavy load, the V6 will probably get worse gas mileage than the V8. The only reason someone should buy a V6 is if they can't afford the V8. Gas mileage is so close that it makes the V8 a "win-win".

i get around 17mph freeway.. i have plenty of mods too...average speed is 75+

Ok, So basically your all saying mileage is about the same for V6 and V8 ? Does the V6 mileage get worse as it gains more miles while the V8 doesn't loose effiency?

And my last question....... If you put a few mods like exhaust and intake on both V6 and V8 and you get a 2" lift and put 31" tires on it, which is gonna suffer the most with mileage?

The V6 will suffer more form bigger tires and a lift more so than the V8. Just like the V6 will suffer from heavier loads (towing) more so than the V8.....as stated above.
