My 2000 V8 has about 1000 miles on it. I know I didn't buy a race car and I don't treat it like one. If I gradually accelerate and the RPMs stay between 2000-3000, I can get up to speed fairly quickly with the V8. However, there have been a few times when I needed some speed in a traffic situation. I was going about 20-30 and had to step on the gas, the engine revs up to about 5000 RPM and then I hear this loud rattling noise. It then takes an extra few seconds to hit that next gear. It makes me feel kind of limited having a strong engine and not being able to get that punch when I need it.
So the question goes: is that rattling sound normal when I rev it too high? What's happening? Is it normal for my trans to take longer to slip into that gear under high RPMs?

Hope I made my question's clear. Thanks in advance for any help.

One more thing, is this related to the truck being AWD? If this message is redundant, please tell me what thread to look for, I checked them all.....

You're either hitting the rev limiter (if there is one, does anyone know?), or you're hearing valve float. My '96 did the same thing once, but I never tried to repeat it. It was around 5,500 rpm.

The tranny is unbelievably slushy; one of the worst automatics I've ever experienced. I use the shift lever a lot, but there's nothing you can do to hasten upshifts. I'm looking into shift kits, 'cause if a vehicle ever needed one, this is it!

I just wanted to bump this back up and see if yall had any more comments on it because i have the same problem. is there any part i can replece where this wont happen. my dads 96 bronco used to do it sometimes durring regular acceleration. It sounds pretty similar but he has the 351 so i dont know if that makes any difference. I only had it happen at high rpms. its ushall i accerlerate hard then it does that for a second or two and then it shifts to the next gear. oh and did yall ever get that rev limiter moved up to 6k with the custom chips. Thanks, Major
