So i'm confidently tearing through all the steps to replace my valve covers (and hopefully my plugs + wires, and timing chain tensioners, if time allows) and it seems as though something has come up.

I have the Felpro VS 50529 R gasket set, and from what I'm looking at, it cannot be the right part. The Autozone guy says its exactly what comes up under the VIN E engine (2001 explorer sohc 4.0, 8th digit in the VIN is definitely E).

The mating surface for the gasket is totally flat on both sides, no groove to stuff this thing into... I'm not convinced this is the right part for my engine. If someone can confirm this or just set me straight in general, I'd be indebted to you forever.

Hi all,

It was a PITA, but I figured it out. If the eight digit in your VIN is "E," you need the following two parts for your valve cover gaskets:

F77Z 6584 AE

F77Z 6584 BA

The VS50529R Gaskets will not work, they do not match the mating surface. I got mine from a Lincoln dealer for way too much, but overpaying by a lot was going to cost about the same as overnighting them, so it's worth it. (I guess...)

Probably not a good idea to buy parts at the dealer...but if thats the only way...you gotta do what you gotta do.

Like I said, I would have paid just as much to have them overnighted. Galaga is my daily driver, so I did not have any choice. That being said-

If you have a 2001 Explorer with the letter E as the 8th character in your VIN, DO NOT BUY the Felpro VS50529R Valve cover gaskets. They are not going to fit. Autozone and Advanced APs both searched by VIN and still told me this was the correct part according to their system. They are WRONG. The passenger side gasket for Vin E engines has a separate little nook for the air hose going into the top of the valve cover. Rock Auto has them.

ALSO, According to the Haynes Manual, 2001 and up is a single piece intake manifold, that's also not true. 2001's have a two piece. Mine is proof. If you have a 2001 Explorer with a one-piece manifold, then SHOW YOURSELF!

My 2001 Ranger (E VIN) has the 1-piece manifold. I don't think I have seen a 2001 Explorer that did though.

Wow, really? They DO exist.
