driveline noises

The ex is getting up in years now, she has 180k on her and despite the gerital, her groans are getting loader. It's made a 'clunk' in the rear for as long as I can remember, usually when it shifts from 3rd to 2nd or if I'm coasting down hill and it goes from 2nd to 3rd. I don't think it's the transmission. Especially now that it's getting loader, it sounds like the rear end. When I had my trans rebuilt the guy said it was common and that all the fords do it. Anyone have this problem and fix it?

Theres more!

Sorry, I forgot to add that I also feel and hear eveything in the suspension as well. I mean I can hear and feel it even when I run over the painted line on the road! Everything is stock. I did have the front shocks changed about 80k ago. Any help would be great, I don't know a thing about suspension.

rear end noise could be u-joint or slip yoke. at 80K, probably time to change the shocks... chances are it'll need ball joints too. Had mine done at 100K and things quieted down a lot.....

Thanks Tom. With 180k on them (balljoints) it's probably time to replace them. I had it jacked up the other day to clean the shift motor so I took the opertunity to push and pull on everything and it all seemed tight. I couldn't find any play in anything.

Mine has 143k miles and has allot of noises going on as well. I had it inspected and they said ball joints and radisu arm bushings.

I also can feel that the LS in the rear end is wearing out.

With your noise from the rear, id, check the u-joints
