Since the Haynes Manual seems to be as useful as a chocolate spanner, I will annoy you with my (daft?) questions.

The car is a 97/P 4.0 SOHC, uk spec, 95k. So in no particular order ........

1/ the square fog/driving lights set in the front bumper haven't worked since i got the car. There doesn't seem to be a switch for them & I can't find which circuit they're on to check the fuse. ( does anyone have a set of decent wiring diagrams I could have/copy ?)

2/ the cigar lighter socket doesn't have any power to it & i can't find which circuit its on to check the fuse. If the socket is faulty does it just pull out or does the black centre panel have to come off the dash first ?

3/ the self levelling suspension seems to work ok (heard & felt it adjust) but the rear end seems to squat all the time - can the system be reset to make the car more level (higher at the back) ?

4/ occasionally the engine cuts out at junctions/ traffic lights but only if the heater/ aircon is on - if the main control is at "off" its ok. it did have a fault code for low signal at the airflow meter which cleared after cleaning the connections, but this didn't cure the stalling.

5/ Is it possible to get replacement alarm/locking remotes ? mine is the single button type.

6/ The abs keeps cutting in at about walking pace when slowing gently (on hard breaking its ok) so I've disconnected one of the wheel sensors for now. Where can I get replacement sensors - is it main dealer only ?

7/ Would my car have standard axles or Traction Lok axles ? (i'm changing diff oils & the traction-lok axles use a different grade oil + friction modifier)

8/ Which tranny do I have ..... 5r55e or 4r70w ?

I think that's all for now. Sorry to be such a pain in the arras, & thanks in advance for any advise / answers you have.

Gary

IAC Valve, 5R55E

You might try cleaning the IAC valve. If that doesn't help then the PCM may not be detecting the position of the Function Selector Switch. The PCM adjusts the commanded idle speed when the Selector Switch is in a position that uses the A/C compressor (MAX A/C, Norm A/C, PANEL/FLOOR, DEF/FLR & DEFROST). Check the purple wire that goes from the switch to PCM pin 41 for continuity.

You have the 5R55E. The 4R70W came with the 5.0L

Yo Gary,
Driving lamps should come on when you use high beam.

3. The system can be reset for height. Turn it off first (switch is in the rear jack compartment). Jack it up at the rear by the chassis so that the axle hangs freely. Lower to the ground and switch the system back on.

4. My guess is you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Possibly a pipe off or leaking lower inlet gaskets. (see OOM12 kit)

6. The sensor comes as part of the wheel hub. But you can swap out if you can get a spare.

7. You will have an open front axle and a 3.73 LS rear (code D4 on the vin plate)

I have a spare ABS sensor you can have FOC, just PM me your address. Easy to fit

4) Clean IAC (on top of the intake) and clean the MAF (the sensor wires inside not the plug wires) Do a seach for both these and you'll get a lot of hits. To clean the MAF electrical contact cleaner works well. Some people also use cotton buds but the wire is delicate so beware if you do. Last time i cleaned an IAC i used carb cleaner.

5) Again do a search but i think for the one button you have to get it programmed by ford. You could get a control box thingy and two matching fobs from chrisquelch and with a bit of work would prob work out cheaper

3) if resetting like howard suggests doesn't work then get some lifted shackles. (rockauto or if enough people want them kev p might be persuaded do make some more, mine from him are cooool

6) As jim said, one of your sensors is out of whack. You could try removing them and cleaning them and the tone ring one at a time before you start switching them out. If you can get codes read a proper scan tool should be able to tell you which corner.

7) Rear diff needs 75/140. Most fully synth will not require the friction modifier.

8) i thought ours was the 4R55E but i could be wrong

Thank you all for the info & advice offered.
just need some decent weather now to get my hands dirty !
