1994 Explorer
I hate making my first post a plea for help, but I don't have much of a choice at this point. I have been searching for hours and haven't found a possible solution.

I am working with a 1994 Explorer XLT, with an automatic (A4LD?) transmission. The last couple days, I started having a slight delay in between pressing the accelerator and movement, both in drive and reverse. Last night, it started ONLY moving forward, in every shifter position, including N and R. It tries to move forward in park, but the pawl keeps it from budging.

It no longer hesitates moving forward, and drives just fine, but goes forward no matter what I do, and I can't back up!I disconnected the shift cable and tried manually shifting it, and it does the same thing. When in N, if the engine is NOT running, it will roll freely. Once the engine is started up, it drives forward regardless.

I need some advice. This is my only vehicle right now, and I need it to work properly. I appreciate any help in advance!

Good news and bad news.
Good news, It may be only a 50 cent seal.
Bad news, The bad seal may be right in the middle of the transmission,
Which means removal of the transmission and a rebuild.
The hard part is removing the transmission from the truck.
Rebuild fairly easy with an illustrated manual.
Cost around $200 for a rebuild kit + another $100 for bands.
I was given a free 94 Explorer because of the reason you described.
I did the rebuild myself and never did find the reason for failure other than most all of the seals on the servos and pistons were hard and worn out at 161K miles. Most likely from heat and old age.
That was 30K miles ago, still working just fine now.
It’s really hard to pinpoint something like that, the valve body tells the transmission to do one thing and with leaking seals it does something else like trying to go forward in any gear.
