So today I go to leave for class and when I tried to start the x it was hard to start. It seems like a timing or electrical issue because it seems to fire at the wrong times or not at all. It runs fine once it has warmed up. There are no CELs. I decided to drive it around the block and it does fine under load, only when i come to a stop and it is cold is when it runs rough. When this first happened, i shut it off, then tried to start it again and it would not start. It would fire intermittently, so I tried again a minuet later and it started. It ran fine yesterday, when I came home from work.

I am looking for some ideas to be tossed around before I start tearing it apart. If you have any input I would really appreciate it.

Hello Audio- my OHV did/sometimes does the exact same thing.

I replaced my IAC and DPFE sensors and cleaned my MAF sensor, and it was a lot better. When I start mine, I hold the key a little longer to make sure it starts "all the way" for lack of a better term. I have heard from some people that a leaky/loose upper intake gasket can cause this as well. If I don't start it this way, it stumbles a bit and wants to stall out. Since I started holding the key slightly longer, it hasn't been a problem since in about a month+

do some searches on how to clean some of the air intake parts/sensors, and the problem might go away , mine was running like that too,, cleaned MAF and the idle air sensor , it went away ,,
:burnout:

I am almost certain that its your intake seals- as they warm up the seal improves- it rides better, when its cold the seal contracts and too much air gets in- ppor start and running problems- Is it sohc or ohc engine- either way mate have a search for manifold seals here- Good luck and let us know ok?

My 96 ex with the 4.0 ohv does that every now and again. I too like joe dirt can just hold the key over a tad longer and it doesn't do it. The engines stumbles and misfires, feels like the timing is off. The few times that it has done this I'd have to turn they key and hold it and keep the gas pedal pressed down.
Mine would do it out of nowhere, cold, warm, hot. The temp didn't matter.
If it's only doing it when it's cold I too would suspect the intake gaskets. But you could try cleaning some of the other parts first and see where you are.

I concur with Walnut- Mine is very intermittent. But what I've wondered is: Mine seems to do it most when the truck is warm already. If I shut it off, and try to start again after 10 minutes or so. So does this mean: Parts are expanding (i.e. upper intake) and making the seal worse, or, is it that I'm crazy- when everything expands, the seal should be tighter than when it's cold?

Is the short answer: "Dirt, replace your intake seals, they suck."

I have a new IAC, DPFE and cleaned my MAF.
