vibration from rear and now hard shifts

I am writing for my brother who has a 2000 explorer with the sohc. he says that when he is at a stop, but in gear, he gets a vibration that he thinks is coming from the rear. he just recently started noticing the problem. today, he said that the tranny is shifting hard. any help as to what might be the problem? he had the tranny filter and fluid changed a few months ago.

Who did the filter change? If the filter is not seated properly it can cause rough shifting and other harshness problems...
