Wandering, loose steering

I'm trying to fix a problem with the steering on my 01 XLT. With some of the high winds we've been having here lately this problem has become much more pronounced. It feels like the steering is loose, though I can't figure out what exactly is out of whack. I find myself continually overcompensating when steering -- I turn left, but then pull too far back on the right to straighten. A friend said that this could be a simple alignment problem, which would be good news to me.

Is it worth having an alignment done, or will that not help?
