Want- 94 XLT factory am/fm cass

My 94 XLT factory AM/FM Cassette, 4-speaker with rear factory preamp died. It says "BAD" on the screen and does nothing but come on. No controls work. Does anyone want to get rid of your same radio because you replaced it with an aftermarket or something? I would like to pop another stock one in. Looking for good price. By the way, if anyone has had intermittant crackling, check your preamp connector pins. The factory crimp job missed on mine. Easy fix, hard to locate. Also, if you need a removal tool, try a piece of 1/4 plywood with four 8 penny nails at the insert locations!

Hi Sink,

That's cool that you actually found the problem of your crackling point. Just for future reference, where is it again? Do you mean the preout pins right behind the radio on the radio or on the harness or prior to the amp, etc?

The crackling was due to intermittant contact in the wiring harness connector at the pre-amp. It started under warranty. On Dealer replaced my right front speaker- no help, next one replaced my entire radio- no help. Same one then replaced the pre-amp- no help. Finally I was out of warranty and still crackling. Ford refused to help- ticked me off. So, I spent about 2 hours with my ohmmeter and some test tunes on the radio (Aeorsmith, I believe). Pulled panels all the way back to the preamp, began shaking wires, and found it. Did a solder job and back in business. The connector is made by some machine laying in the pins and wire ends, then the whole thing is stamped. One wire end was mispositioned and stamped just off the end of the pin- inside the connector. By the way, those pins cn be pulled out the back of the connector to fix if needed. Ford may know how to build a good vehicle, but I blew them away at fixing it.
