'87 Bronco II Eddie Bauer
I'm back to ask again what Explorer would be good. I'm trying to keep my mind fresh on what's good... so here goes...

I have a 1987 Ford Bronco II Eddie Bauer, 2.9 with the A4LD. I know the Explorer V6 is the 4.0 using the A4LD as well, and I do know about the A4LD being a weak POS (my tranny in the BII is 2.5 years old). And I know about the 5.0 in the Explorer being a good engine and the automatic for it really good... but I was wondering...I don't have much money to use (won't be able to buy one for a long time, actually) and I was wondering if the 4.0 and A4LD in an Explorer would hold out a good long time as I plan on getting an Explorer as my next car (which I NEED to last a long time, at least a few years).

Also, isn't the 4.0 based on the 2.9, but with a bigger displacement?

Get the 4.0 SOHC with the 5R55E tranny. It has a better track record that the A4LD. These can be found in 97 and up X's.

OR

The OHV with the 4R55E tranny.

Oh yes!! That too is a great possability...

I like the 4.0 SOHC... my friend drives his mom's 2001 Explorer Sport sometimes with the 4.0 SOHC and auto (all 4.0 SOHC, whether sport or 4 door, engines used the 5R5EE, right? just making sure) and it's been a great car...

I've heard something about a recall on those engines though... like, something with cam tension or something, I dunno. Most of the time they've owned that Ex Sport the CEL has been on, unknowing of what it was... but it never makes any strange noises and has been running great!

Oh yeah, I meant to ask... what would insurance be around for mah age? I'm 17, and we currently pay almost $300 on three vehicles:

2000 Ford Mustang 3.8 V6 auto
2003 Chevrolet Astro 4.3 Vortec V6 auto
1987 Ford Bronco II 2.9 V6 auto

...if that gives u a good idea...

A first gen explorer should not be that much more than your B2 if any at all.My old 90 B2 had a 4.0 in it

i paid around 700+ every six months on my 01 sport. at 22. depends also on your driving record. i had some minor speeding tickets.
the cam tensioner is a major issue for the sohc engines up to about 2000, and the blend door, ball joints etc.
my pass side lower ball joint is going bad at 40k. wonderfull!

Kind of off-topic, but how do I know if I have the A4LD tranny or 5R55E tranny? I've got a 1997 4.0 SOHC with a 3.73LS axle. I looked on the window sticker (the one thats on the window at the dealer) and can't find it anywhere! Thanks all.

im 18, and my insurence is 2100 a year...with one speeding ticket

400!!!! what, lucky @s5, not fair at all. where do you live?

Scott

My driving record is clean...

Anyone have an answer to my post?

don't really know what explorer to recomend, I have an '88 ranger with a rebuilt 4.0 in it and a '93 xlt I just bought with 100k on it.
as far as insurance I bought the 4.0 explorer and took the insurance off the wife's '90 cherokee and saved 90 buckes every 6 months I strongly recomend "gieco" for the thirty something crowd.
I don't know how they are with the under 25 yr age group but I did find them to be at least twice as expensive as my grandparents insurance through aarp. As a result I insure my grandma's car on my insurance and saved around three hundred a year.

right now, i pay like 700 every 6 mos for basic PL/PD with progressive...thats with one accident ( $3000 damage, no others involved) and one ticket for blowing thru a blinking red. i have progressive, but i HAD state farm. they threatened to cancel me after the accident so i got my own policy.
