I know someone who has 2 Garrett T3 Turbos. One is factory rebuilt. Not sure what he wants for them. Also not sure if they will work on the Explorer. They are water cooled. And have the wastegate also. Let me know if your interested and i'll see what he wants for them.
If you wait a little while longer, Explorer Express will be coming out with one that is made specifically for that engine and includes a chip to make it go just a little faster and will be approved for smog. Also I beleive that Apten already has one for us, but it is not approved yet and it also comes with an Apten Chip.
From what I recall he blew a lifter, and had all sorts of smaller, random problems. I don't think there were ever any pics either, so could've just been pure BS to begin with.
i just bought a rebuilt turbo off of e-bay for 260.00 shipped, it was originally from a buick grand national ... should be perfect for a 4.0 .... so there goes the blower ..... will be using water/alcohol injection since i will be running around 12 psi ( and some other tricks to keep it cool, won't tell to make sure it works) will try to amke it work without an intercooler .... the main reason is the blower is taking about 40 hp to turn at peak rpm ... there is not alot of room for exhaust so it's going to be a tight fit
let me know how it works. I would really like to do that. My fantasy right now is to throw a 03 cobra engine in the X. BUt thats kind of far fetched. I would still love to do it.
I'd shoot for a V8 before I tried a turbo. Your engine most likely has high mileage, which is already a no-no for boost. I plan on adding a supercharger to mine, and when it dies, it'll be V8 time. At least with a 302 there are turbo kits out there, and you won't have to ghetto fab it. If you do get a turbo, at any point, try and get a newer one. Most have very little lag.
