Looking online at an 02 Explorer with 107K miles but not sure how reliable --seeing lots on timing chain problems-how could I reliably know if the sales person is telling me the truth about work done on the chain? The price is $5999 and it is loaded and looks great. Before I travel the 70 miles to see and drive it what should I be asking --it is an independant dealer --

im 99% positive the timing chain problem was fixed in 2002+ explorers. another common problem with 3rd gens is the rear end going out and the transmission. look into getting a v8 explorer....more reliable and gas mileage isnt that much worse.

The just test drive it and listen for a whine. Even if it does whine may be a good time to talk the price down and have the bearings/seals replaced in the rear. Parts are like 150 bucks..

welcome

take it to a mechanic and have him look it over. mine does a pre purchase inspection for $65 and its well worth it.
