Howdy.....New guy here. Was hoping you folks could please help me with my problem.

99' Ford Explorer 4.0L SOHC

Xmas day it konked out. In Indiana, but I live in VA. No tools so had it towed in. Chevy dealer only one open (26th). They put new spark plug and wires, and fuel filter. They did not get it fixed. Repair (Chevy) and tow (U-Haul) from IN to VA $1453 and it still not running.

Symptoms...
Will start right up on cold or morning start.
Will run on and on as long as I let it.
If you then turn it off, it will not restart.
If I'm lucky, after much cranking can get it to finally to start with TLC on the gas pedal, but stalls when put in gear.
It seems to be cranking fast, maybe, maybe not ??????
Engine light NOT coming on and no code read on my scanner.
60 lb. fuel pressure (per mechanic)
120 psi on random cyl (no. 5) (Did not remove all plugs and open throttle up)

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Seem like it is not getting any spark to the ignition. I would check the CRANK POSITIONING sensor. You can start by cleaning the connection with electrical cleaner or may have to replace the entire sensor.

Engine No Start Procedure

This may give you some ideas: Engine No Start Procedure

It might be an intermittent fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure when the engine doesn't want to start. Has it been more than 30,000 miles since the fuel filter was changed?

The mechanic said fuel pressure at 60 lb., but I'll check it again to be sure. Fuel pump put in 1 1/2 year ago. Fuel filter changed last week by mechanic.

The "no start" procedure linked to says Check Engine light on when cranking means the crankshaft position sensor, (as per Ranger Als suggestion.) I'll get it out when the weather allows. Not a good time for shade tree mechanics.

Running out of time and bad weather. Had it hauled off today to another mechanic. We'll see what he finds. Thanks for your help

Well, got it fixed at the local shop. He said coolant temp sensor showing "minus 40 degrees".

Thanks for your help!!!!
