My steering wheel recently started making a clunking noise when I would turn. After hearing it for two weeks I finaly took the horn cover off and a lead weight fell out. I can see that it was attatched at one point with rubber bumpers put mine had given out. What purpose does this thing serve. I am pretty sure I can do with out but it seems really strange to me. Let me know if you have any idea what this could be.

wheel weights

maybe it balances the wheel when you spin it real fast...:D

It probably is either a vibration absorber, since it is mounted with rubber pads, or it might be a cushion for the horn, something like that. Does the horn still work?

You can probably live without it, but if you notice something like your horn working irregularly, making a contact sound from where it hit the weight/pad before, or more vibration from the wheel than usual, you might want to reattach it.

the horn doesn't work--I didn't think that it took up enough space to even make contact. I was recently in a front end collision so I need to make sure everything is ok on the horn end. Thanks for your help

Terry

I took the weight out of mine about a year ago because of the same problem ,and I havent noticed any difference. Not sure what its for but seems fine without it. Good luck

The weight dampens vibration that is sent to the steering wheel.
