Hello guys!
I currently drive a 1998 XLT with a 4.0L V6. I have long suspected that I had a blown head gasket, and used some sealant in order to stop the coolant leak. I drained and replaced my oil, and replaced a fowled spark plug. My truck is now up and running better than it has in the past year of me owning it (Doesn't burn antifreeze any more :)) My truck now has a strange "Chain sound" only when in drive, and gets louder the higher the RPMs are. The sound stops in neutral, and is quite loud..The sound is kind of hard to hear, it comes across more high pitched in the video than it really is; I tried to get a video of the sound here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7a-hFEum685aEZvVU1NdkVnNFU/view?usp=sharing
I thought it could've been the timing chain but I am assuming that it would still be audible when it is in neutral, which it is not.

Aside from this sound, my truck also seems to hesitate and shake when pulling away from stop signs. Alongside this, while going higher speeds, it will start shaking violently until i either let off the gas or push harder on the gas to get it to shift; I don't suspect this to be a transmission problem as it does not happen in one specific gear: I can get the same results in any gear, although it did get significantly better after I replaced the spark plug.

Thank you for any help that is posted, I appreciate it!

I can't really hear it on the video, too much ambient noise but I'm still thinking timing chain since you did write "chain" sound.

Is check engine light coming on, any trouble codes found?

I think you need to get the head gasket done... tackle what you know is wrong before looking for something else and keep an eye on oil quality until then to be sure coolant isn't getting into the oil.

I think that my check engine light is broken, because I have pulled misfire codes off of it a long time ago when the check engine light wasn't on. Would you suggest I get codes pulled?
And I don't understand how it would be the timing belt if it doesn't happen when I am in neutral.

Tension on the timing chain can depend on RPM/load. Maybe a chain in the transmission? Is it 4WD or 2WD?

Definitely get the codes pulled. You might have more than one problem.

Its a 4wd but the sound happens when in "auto". I will get codes pulled and see what happens.
