whats up guys. Got another question about my $300 explorer! Got it running (needed a starter), and now im getting some weird grinding noise from the front end, and shes binding at full lock when turning, or close to it.

Its a 99 explorer 4.0 auto trans with auto/4high/4low switch 167k on her, with 40k on new trans

It happened when I was backing out of a parking spot, I hit some loose road gravel, gave it some gas, broke the rear tires loose and ever since then its been like this. It still drives fine under normal situations, just extremely hard to drive when turning into a parking spot. I am also noticing some noise on decell. I have made a video of the noise, so feel free to check it out:

thanks again guys! oh and check engine light is on for an evap leak

Sounds fine to me. Not trying a jerk, but let this also be a message to others, cell phone video diagnostics are useless. The quality is not there without setting up some external mics. Even with headphones on, your truck sounds fine in your vid. Put your laptop in there, run a mic out, and make an mp3.

Also we need to know more, which engine, which drivetrain, how many miles on truck.

this might be a dumb question but are you in full time 4x4 mode? what you describe sounds like what I did when I first got the truck and drove a bit on dry pavement in 4x4 it binds up like crazy. otherwise maybe a problem with transfer case? just a guess.

Sounds like it's locked in 4wd.

I thought the same thing, but I don't recall him mentioning what model he has.

sorry guys! completely spaced out about that info.

sorry about the quality of the vid, but you can still hear some sound. I was trying to make a vid instead of trying to describe what it was doing.

sorry about that. its actually not a cell phone, I was using a sony video camera but its from about 2007 so a little bit old technology. only have a desktop and an iphone so I figured the video camera would be the best option

Is it a 4WD? EDIT: sorry, missed that post. If its binding that would almost have to be stuck in 4WD. Or some really bad CVs. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes? If it. Still seems stuck in 4WD, you can check for voltage at the brown wire. Off should show about .6V on should be up around 5.6V. An even simpler check you can do, is open the drivers door and get in the fuse panel. Remove the fuse for 4WD system. This will also kill your power windows and domes, but also cut power to the front axle. See if it binds then. You will evetually narrow it down and find your problem.

drdoom, do you know which fuse that is?
Thanks
