I have a '99 XLT that has a strange windshield wiper problem. Occassionally (maybe once every 10 days or so), the wipers will turn themselves on (the switch doesn't move), they do 2 up/down cycles on the windshield, and stop again.

Has anyone else had this problem? I have noticed that the activity seems to happen shortly after I have had my turn signal on (I believe usually for L-turn). I suspect there may be some sort of glitch in the wiper/signal switching in the stem, but it really hasn't been enough of a nuissance to dig into it. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm curious if it's just me or a known problem.

The stalk that controls the wiper and turn indicators has had problems in certain years. The problem is excess grease. take apart clean and install is the solution. Good luck

EDIT

That stalk was recalled:

The recall was for the GEM Module. My '99 had it. If you have not done so, get the recall work done and you should not have any further problem!

mine wont shut off

Just today, my windshield wipers stay on, though the knob is on off. they stay at the lowest speed, but its just aggravating to have my wipers on when its not raining. would cleaning the stalk help this problem also?

Call Ford at 1-800-3923673. The free repair is campaign #00b40. They are very nice about it.

Rear Wiper

After i had my body lift installed my Rear wiper stopped working. This last weekend I fussed around with some of the wires. Today it rained so I opted to try it out and it WORKED!!! :D

Here's my problem, it doesn't wipe the first section of the window, only the last section. I see a lot of X's where it looks like they are having the same problem. Did the heat from the summer take the contour out of the blade? Do I just need to buy a new replacement blade to fix the problem?:(

Mine does it too.

No, simply bend the arm towards the window about 1/2"The whole wiper blade will contact the window.......

Actually, I did a search for windshield wipers. Seems this was a very popular thread subject for awhile. Seems the newer models with the curved rear windows have this problem the worst. It sounded like nobody really ever found a good solution. Several things were mentioned to help...but none cured the problem. The most common suggestion was to bend the arm. I tried that, but it does not help a lot...makes my arm get stuck in the gap around the rear glass. A couple of guys mentioned that they bought a new wiper blade from FORD and it helped. Aftermarket blades were causing them problems??!! I think we might have to live with it, but if you come up with anything...please post!!!

Are you saying they will replace the multifunction switch for free?

Yes, I got a recall notice in the mail and did a post about it a while back.

Does anyone know whether the recall on the Multifunction switch relates to the Rear Wiper as well. My rear wiper will intermittently not work, and I did have the multifunction switch replaced under recall already am wondering if this is the problem.

Thanks.

The rear wiper is not controlled by the multifunction switch. Thats the stalk on the steering column. The rear is a seperate switch.

I had the mysterious wiper turn-on problem twice, they replaced the GEM module twice. Been okay for a couple years now.

Bending the wiper arm solved my rear wiper problem too. Rear wiper motors are a fairly common problem.

I need to know ONP 00840, if someone have a copy, please sent me

my rear wiper missed the window for a long time as well. then my wiper motor went out. after i got that fixed the arm still missed a part of the glass (the Ford guys said they fixed it...) so i just played with it a little until i had the right bend to get all of the glass.
