After welding on exhaust pipes the truck started went about 100 ft and died. Any ideas on what I burnt up or what is most suceptible, 98 4.0 sohc sport

I gotta lean against O2 on this one. They usualy wont keep a truck from running. I know a guy with an sohc that burned up all 4 and it still runs. the 2 possibilities I see are this.

Computer fried cause batt was still connected during welding (i never had this happen after hundreds of exhausts but hear it can)

or coincidence. Check for spark, check for fuel, work it form there

im with rookie.... an o2 sensor would make the truck run like crap, not keep it from running..... when welding, did you have the vehicle off and the battery disconnected?

i have welded on my yota several times with the radio on in the car, but my truck doenst have a sensitive ECU like an explorer..... this might jsut be hot air... but i have heard that on the newer ECU equipped vehicles that even jsut using the groundplane for welding can cause enough of a surge to fry the ECU

along those lines might also want to check fusible links or fuses, as they can blow and stop the vehicle from running if you blew a critical one.... welding does create a lot of heat and a lot of current draw through circuits...

I cut off both cats with a sawzaw thinking they could be pluging due to loss of power. I used a wire welder to weld back after finding it looked ok. It started up went 100 ft and died, it has spark, fuel press, but sounds out of time. No I didnt disconnect battery and have welded successfuly on other cars the same way. Not this time, Where do they hide the ecu?

The computer should be mounted in the firewall on the passenger's side.

So the truck didnt run right before the welding? Is that correct?

It was running but missed at an idle and seemed to lack the power it used to have

do you have the SOHC or OHV? If SOHC then I would suspect that the intake gaskets may be bad which may account for the "missing" and poor performance. Maybe even incorrect fuel pressure. A bad/dity MAF may also cause poor performance. My 99 SOHC would misfire with the bad intake gaskets and throw the P0300 as well as the P0171 and P0174

As for the not running... are there any codes in the computer?
