I knew it was coming, and now it's here. The O/D on off light started flashing today on the highway and the torque converter did it's usual constant lock/unlock today alot more often. It now slips in every gear and thuds when I come to a complete stop. Also I hear a buzzing in my dash when this happens. For some reason the "check wallet" light comes on along with the o/d light.

I am getting 1 flash, 2 flashes, and 11 flashes on the o/d light, can someone decipher them for me? Is it salvageable or am I going down in the ranks of explorer owners with a ruined tranny?

Man talk about bad timing! So your tcase should be in this week huh. Well i guess it will be a good time to get that plate in the floor board and make sure everything else is in good working order! Sorry about your luck man, i don't have any idea about the codes!

Happy trails!!

Yeah ain't it a shame. Fluid is red and does not smell or appear to be burnt either. This really puts a damper on my plans.

Yeah when mine went out the second time i was on the interstate, it just wouldn't shift into OD and the fluid, well the tranny wasn't but 6 months old, i did change the fluid when i got it back home, of course that was a waste of money cause it didn't help!

Happy trails!!

Does anyone know what the codes mean?

I think the codes mean reset the computer and try me again before bringing me in for expensive repairs. :-)
Mine lasted an extra 4,000 miles after the light first came on.

And if the lights mean something minor right now, it could mean something major if you just reset the lights and drive it until they come back on. I would rather find out why the lights came on now, not why they came back on in 4000 miles.

Well, I thought about that also, but every tranny that has flashing lights get replaced....I figure if you reset the computer and the lights stay off for 4,000 miles then it's nothing major. Mine was nothing major buy ford said it needed to be replaced anyway. if it's got over 70,000 on it I can almost bet they will want to put a new one in and if you can get a little extra life out of it...Id say go for it.:bounce:

Heck with the automatic, Jason do a manual swap, that way you know what's going on with your tcase and your manual tranny, haha, that's my solution for everything i think, just convert it to something else!

Happy trails!!

Naw if I want the rents to help pay with repairs the tranny needs to stay the way it came from the factory. I don't really want a 5 speed anyway, especially if I can get another 92k miles out of a replacement.

I'm going to take the truck into an independent tranny shop today to see what their diagnosis is.

Jason,
Just a thoguht from past experiance.
i think getting it diagnosed at an indapendant shop is cool, but i would not have a shop rebuild it. My dad has had experiance with rebuilds...both from shops and from the ford garage on one of his past cars. The ford dealer rebuild lasted longer then both of the indapendant shop rebuilds he had (he killed 3 trannies) When it came time to fix mine we opted for a factory rebuilt unit. The factory rebuild is more expensive, but at the same time will most likely run longer (hence the warentee that is double that of a dealer rebuild) If the shop you bring it to says it needs a rebuild, I would either consider getting a Jasper tranny (for the most reliability) or opt for a ford factory rebuilt unit.
Just my $.02
Good luck!

95XLT, thanks for the advice. That was exactly what I was thinking. My dad's town & country van was rebuilt at this place and it failed again 10K miles later. My parents have connections with a Ford dealer and I will definitely pursue getting a factory rebuild. The only reason I'm taking it to this place is to make sure that this isn't just an easy fix that doesn't require a replacment or rebuild.

ALso after it is replaced, if you don;t already have one, I would install an external auxiallry transmission cooler. It will help th enew tranny last even longer.

UPDATE:

THE TRANNY IS NOT TOAST!!! (although this thread may see some activity in times to come)

The problem appears to be my TPS. The shop reset my computer and it works fine for now. I will go about replacing my TPS very soon.

One question, i'm not sure what the TPS stands for, probably do just can't remember, can you fill me in, thanks! Good to hear this news too from you!!

Happy trails!!

Throttle Postition Sensor.

I like Jot017's idea of just converting everything to manual stuff and completely doing away with automatic stuff. Automatic stuff always dies. Hubs, T-cases, Transmissions, heck i bet if Ford offered an automatic climate control it would fail too. Besides manual stuff makes driving more fun:bounce:

Ford does have an automatic climate control.....and, yes, it does fail!

THanks SSIKORA, i knew that, i was just making sure you did!! haha

That's a good one Travis. Ok89, i've never looked at it that way, but it is true it seems like!! haha
