The two new ones have been giving me a bit of a heard time. I am a FORD MAN but these two are starting to make me believe the thing I have heard about this year rang of SUV. Anyway that's a hole other story I am her to ask what you guys are getting for MPG out of your 4.6 mountaineers the one I am driving is a 2004 3.73 gears I don't drive it hard at all and it is telling me I'm only getting about 12 MPG and that does not seem right to me.

There are a few things I'm thinking it could be like filters but just wanted to see what you guys had to say. It has 95k on it.

Wow...is one of those a parts vehicle or did you really decide to buy 2 just for fun lol?

I can't speak for that generation but my '00 Mounty with the 5.0 averaged about 12 around town. Sorry :(. It's a truck.

I could get 16 or 17 on the highway though on flatland!

here's my suggestions that might help you out, should you plan on keeping them stock...

performance mods are another ball game...

plugs / wires - OEM replacement

fuel filter

trans / diff's flush - ( synthetic )

coolant flush

synthetic engine oil

tire pressure ( 5psi below max pressure )

seafoam treatment ?

new air filter ( K&N )

fuel injector cleaner

remove cross bars on roof rack

I have a 4.0L and I do all inner city driving. I wish I was getting 12 mpg...

My X with an intake and exhaust did not even get 10 MPG on teh last tank of gas. This next one will be worse with all the snow and idling.

I had the 2002 Mountaineer with 4.6L V8 and 3.73 rear - identical to yours.
I was getting consistently getting 14.7 mpg in the winter and 15.7 mpg in the summer. I just remember those numbers because it seemed like they always were the same at the end of a tank of gas.
I mostly used it to get to and from work and a little weekend shopping so I guess the routes were always the same. I in general drive very efficiently without being an old lady :thumbdwn:
My driving is 3 miles on the highway, 3 miles on country road and 1-2 miles city. That accounts for 90% of my driving to and from work.
However if you just keep up with traffic around town it is likely that you would see around 12 mpg. A friend of mine had the same truck and did mostly city driving with around 11 mpg as average.

All that being said I agree with the suggestions to make sure that everything is in top shape for the best gas milage.
But at least this gives you something to compare to.
I was getting 18-19 mpg in on pure highway milage.

And BTW congrats on the new trucks. I loved mine and only sold it after a blown transmission (02 syndrome) and upgraded to a 2008 Mounty V8.

tire pressure ( 5psi below max pressure )

really? never do this, ever.

tire max pressure is over 80 psi, esp on lt tires.

he should keep his tire pressure at 35 psi, and maintain that, and rotate them every 5-7k, over inflated and under inflated tires will wear faster, will get high or flat spot and other problems. best thing for tire life is keep it at the factory spec. they have nerds that get millions to figure this out.

Wow...is one of those a parts vehicle or did you really decide to buy 2 just for fun lol?

No one is not for parts but the black one will be getting sold.

I found the black one first and needed a car bad so I got it then two days later found the silver one  and it was more of what I wanted (pretty much fully loaded premier) so I got it to.

What in the world happened to your old white explorer! That's what I call totally destroyed.

edit: went on to the 2/3 pages of the pictures and saw the pole. Wow. Someone was watching out for you to live through that.

What in the world happened to your old white explorer! That's what I call totally destroyed.

Well the short version is I got hit in the drivers door doing 60 then spun hit a curb and went air born while in the air flipped roof first in to the poll in the pics.

I jumped out the window the sec the SUV stopped moving.
When the firefighter got there he looked in the truck looking for a body and then looked at me covered in blood looked back at the truck and asked where you in this car!? I said yes I was driving he replied how did you get out I said I hopped out the window his jaw hit the floor then it looked like he dropped a deuce when I refused to go to the hospital but he did bandage me up.

The truck was still running when I jumped out (built ford tough) I had to turn it off because I had just filled it and gas was pouring out everywhere.

A pic of the good times. :(

Wow, that wreck really did a number on your old explorer. Glad you made it out okay though. Did it buckle the frame even? Because it sure looks like it. At least it saved your life in the end, which is all you can ask in that situation. These trucks are tough, and safe because of it.

Congrats on the new purchases though, it should be fun to play with two of them.

Pretty much Everything is bent and broke.

The hole truck is bent toward the passenger side from the hit to the drivers door then its bent up from the hit to the pole. The floor is buckled up roof pushed down rear end is broke drive shaft came out.....ect ect ect

The front clip is not bad and it still ran like I said.

Going to part it then crush her. :salute: :(
