Hey there guy's and gal's ok here my concern. This moring when i was starting my x with a 4.0 ohv i turned the key but not long enoght for the motor to pick up and run. And what happen was the motor like back fired or some thing and made a loud noise. It seemed to come from i don't know where it seemed like some of the cylinders fired but some did'nt and the motor shut off. I waited like 10 sec and cranked her up and boom she fired up and sounded great i drove to work and it drove fine flet find there where no problem at all. Then when i got to work i notice that there was like a humming sound coming from under the hood. But only at idle when i rev it the humm kind of goes away but it still there and kind of sound like a turbo but very quiet but you can hear it. It kind of sound's like when you have you ground on the radio on the wrong place and when you drive you hear that humm trow the speaker's like you have turbo or some thing. So then after work i start my x boom right of way it start no problem and the noise was not there i get home and there it is i can hear it again. It seem's to come when the motor is warmed up i poped the hood and i can't really seem to find it. It kind of sound like it's coming from like the alternator or the belt tesioner or some thing but not quiet sure. But my x run great idle's great is just like how it allways was beside that noise an i am kind of worried. I guess my question is do any of you guy's and gal's can think of any thing for me to check that could possibley be. I really hope i did not mess any thing up internaly i know a lot about car and motor but i just want to get some opion's from ever one on here because your guy's are great and really helpful. lot's of mind's are better then one you know.

I would really aprecaite the help

Just throwing this out, could it be the moan from an IAC going bad?

Hey wasup alec thank's for the reply. This is what i got so fare i can't do really much because it is allready dark and i don't want to wake people up. But i poped the hood and start her up and once again right of way she start's up she run and idles great very good. But what i have discoverd is the humm is coming from the front of the engine but i can't really pin point it. I don't know if it's coming from the water pump or the tensener or where i just hear it in the front it kind of loud at idle but get's quieter at high rpm's. But i know for a fact that after what happen when i was trying to start it this morning after that it started to do this.

Once agian Alec thanks i really hope i can get this figured out.

Does any know who might sell a tool that help pin point noise that you tell where there coming from.

Alec i will try to see if i can hear the IAC (Idle air control) making noises it could be a posabilty.

When it is humming, pull the cover off the air filter. If the noise gets REALLY LOUD, it's your IAC. Does it when the engine is idling at operating temperature and it's hot outside..... That is your IAC - try cleaning or replacing. Replaced mine on my '99.

Thank for the info. But i think it is some thing else because i have the open air k&n kit and i listen to the air filter and the nosies coming from it. And there is nothing it sound clean very clean. When i start my x and when the motor is cold you can berley hear it but when i get to work you can hear it. It's queit loud but when i rev it it get quiter but kind of does like a low super charger humm. But beside that my x run great very great idle sweet run's sweet idle's really smooth. but iam deffnely going to try to check the idle air control unit.

Thanks's guy's i really apprecaite it.

It seem's like it coming fromt the water pump area but there are no leaks and no notice of coolent drop and i just did a cooling system flush like 4 month's ago. The coolent and raditor are like brand new in side. But i will try to find it thanks once again.

I would like to know of any updates to this problem. I have the same problem and it is about to drive me up the wall.
