I posted recently about a possible timing chain replacement on a V8 4.6 Turns out the chain didn't break, but the guides, tensioners, etc. were all replaced. Of course the chains were replace too.
After driving a few blocks I noticed a rough idle and soon the Check Engine Light appeared. I stopped by Auto Zone and had them read the code. They informed me that cylinder 4 was misfiring.
I did have some problems with the boot on that coil in the past, so I decided to go ahead and change the coil and spark plug.
While driving the car I noticed a strong gasoline odor, and when I pulled the spark plug it was very wet. It didn't smell unusual, but it seemed very wet.
After replacing the plug and coil with new ones, the car runs smoother than I ever remember, probably because of the new chains, but the check engine light is still on, and it still smells like gasoline in the car.
When I called the mechanic about the rough idle, he thought maybe he got something wet when he was cleaning the engine with water. (This was before I found the wet spark plug)
Because of my work schedule, it will actually weeks before I can get the car back to the mechanic. Any anecdotes I can try in the meantime to save myself a trip.
Thanks
