I HAVE A 2003 FORD EXPLORER 4X4 THAT JUST STARTED TO GIVE ME TRANS PROBLEMS. SO I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALER TO SEE IF I COULD GET IT SCAN TO SEE WHAT CODES IT HAS AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST ME $175.00 JUST FOR THE SCAN. AND IF I WANTED TO GET A NEW TRANS $3,000 TO $4,000. ARE THESE GUYS FOR REAL??? I EVEN ASKED THEM IF THEY COULD TELL ME WHICH TYPE OF TRANS I HAD ON MY TRUCK AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD TELL ME ONCE IT WAS SCAN. SOME SERVICE. WOW. IS THERE A WAY TO SCAN THE TRANS ON YOUR OWN? HOW DO I KNOW WHICH TYPE OF TRANS I HAVE ON MY TRUCK. ANY HELP? THANKS GREGORY

stay away from the dealer for repairs , labor is too high

go to a local trans shop

i think autozone will scan for codes for free

i go to dealers for parts only (ive been burned too many times using some aftermarket parts) nothing is worse than dong the same job 2 times because of defective parts

AZ won't be able to scan tranny codes. Only those related to the eng (CEL)

While I've heard differing opinions, and it probably varies from one place to the next, I've actually had good luck with my local AAMCO dealer. I've given them several opportunities now to screw me and they haven't done it any time. I brought in my jeep which was shifting erradically, etc. and they could've easily charged me to rebuild it and I wouldn't have known better, but they told me it was just a sensors and charged me something like $125 including the diagnostic and labor... then I brought in my explorer which was having air conditioning issues, expected them to tell me I needed a new compressor, but it was just an expansion valve, $80-90 including diagnostics and labor and I was on my way. As I recall my aamco will scan the codes for free if you get the repairs done there, otherwise its like $45 or something.

Here's my vin # hope this helps to determine what type off trans my truck has....

Matt. I have heard good things about aamco and i think im going to give them a try.. Thanks gregory

The only time I take the X to the dealer for service is if it's a recall.

While independent shops are cheaper you have to be careful with them to. I was having a problem with my tranny and took it to a transmission shop and they told me it needed a rebuild. I didn't think so and checked online to see what I could find out. That was how I found this site. It turned out a filter change was all I needed.

That has been over three years ago now and it is still going strong.

Filter and fluid was about $45 compared to $1200 to $1500 for a rebuild.

You have 5R55S transmission

The problem im having with the trans is that the rpm go almost to 3500 & 4000
before shifting from 1 gear to 2. Then after that trans seems to shift fine until i come to a full stop and it does it again. I seem to solve the problem sometime by taking off my foot of the gas pedal when it hits 3000 and it shift fine. But this is not normal. Also i got the over drive off light blinking and service engine soon light on also.

These lights came on as soon trans starting acting up. Any ideas. Thanks

since the idea of AAMCO came up ill throw in my families 2 cents

well we go to them for all trans issues, my mother actually has a Ford LTD that has over a million miles on the car, not sure on how many engines but i believe it was only one or two trans

so when my trans went out (second and fifth gear were messed up) then we went to them, give me a day and ill put up the cost of what my repaired trans cost, the repair bill is in the car still i believe

You should be able to get any codes related to that from a regular scan gauge. Either get the codes for free from somewhere like AutoZone, or if you will make use of it you can buy your own tool for <$50 and have it for whenever you need it.

The problem could be a hardware issue like the servos, but it could be as simple as the solenoid block being bad. If it is, I have a like-new one for sale a lot cheaper than new, and tested good if you want to PM me about it. It could also be a valve body issue, which is also relatively easy to address.
