What am I looking at here?

My '91 explorer xlt has been running really rough at idle and is very down on power and has developed terrible mileage. then yesterday i started smelling gas like it was running way rich. A 30 second look under the hood and I see clear liquid where none should be. Its gas. It appears to be leaking out of a small canister looking thing that is bolted to the fuel rail on the passenger side of the engine with a small diameter hose coming out the top. What is it? Is it the fuel pressure regulator?

Yes, that is the fuel pressure regulator. That is likely the reasoning for all your problems. Easy to replace, get a new one and swap it out and all should be well.

had the same problem. wasn't the fuel pressure regulator it's self .it was the o ring. take the regulator valve out .as you take it out there's a o ring around the stem ,mine was cracked. 59 cent part can't remember now. but cheaper than the regulator.it still might be the regulator but it's wherth the look any way. it might save you some cash.

thanks to the both of you, especially for the tip to check the o-ring. An FPR for my explorer is hard to come by where I'm from and therefore expensive so an o-ring would be nice.

Just wanted to reply for anyone googling this because they have the same symptoms. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and my explorer runs like new. I had to disconnect the radiator hose from the thermostat housing to get at the bolts and it still was a pain, but all is well now. I love this forum.
