Idle will drop below normal (around 500 rpm), and a check engine light with a code indicating excessive idle speed are a start. Also, you may want to see if cleaning the IAC with throttle body cleaner helps you out some. I was able to keep one alive for another 6 months be cleaning it once a month until it finally closed shut for good on me during last summer.
