OK guys I took the manifold off and looked at the picecs I belive to be lifters. The are at the othere end of the connecting rod. WEll I tried to take on out to inspect it and the black top comes off, in fact 3 or 4 of 12 do. Othere lifters wont move up at all, and some will not go all the way down. My question is: is this the prob with my pinging/chatering sound, and how do I remove the lifter all the way? Here are soem pics below. ARe these lifters or rod bearings?

first off you hands looks really clean to be working on a motor. just joking.

looks like they are part of the lifter or push rod. kind of a guide or seat for the push rod to rest/sit in. the lifters that wont push down are resting on the cam shaft lobe. the oil is keeping the lifters from pulling up very easily.

other that what those black things are i'm not very sure.

hope this helps you a little bit.

ya those are the lifters and unfortunately I believe you have to remove the heads to take the lifter all the way out. also some won't go down because the camshaft pushes them up and down and the lobes of the cam are pointing up which is holding them up. and as far as the pinging/chatering sound it could be the lifters (which is a common problem) but you also want to check the push rods and the rocker arms were they make contact with the push pods for indentions and wear.
hope this helps

(someone correct me if i'm wrong)

I check all the push rods, they check out to be fine and as far as the rocker arms, I guess there fine, how do ya tell?

How did you check the push rods? Take the rocker assembly off and look at the cups the push rods sit in, they will be worn pretty good I bet. Also look at the tips that ride on the valve stems. Label as you go - if you dont replace them they have to be put back in the same position.

The plastic cups you took off were from the lifters- they ride on the cam and may be either up or down. You may be able to remove the lifters if the cones are off without removing the heads. Not sure, but maybe. IF YOU REMOVE THE PUSHRODS FROM THE ROCKERS AND LIFTERS THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED IN THE SAME LOCATION WITH THE SAME ORIENTATION, they have worn in together and if you are not replacing them they will wear faster if they are miss placed.

Good Luck and have fun.
