I have a 94 explorer with 3.73 gears in the rear and am running a bone stock setup, p235/75/r15 tires.

Lately i think i am running a bit high on the rpm side when i'm crusing down the freeway. Unless my mind is playing games with me i was running at
2000 @ 70 m.p.h.
it seems as of lately i am running 2300-2400 rpm's at 70 m.p.h. and i'm wondering if i am having tranny troubles or what the heck is going on. it seems to shift at the normal points and nothing seems to be out of the normal.

I'm curious what everone else is running at 70 with 3.73 rear end and stock tires. should be the same i think...right or is there something wrong with the tranny?

Any body else expericed this...if so i wanna hear from ya.
Thanks everyone

Im usually at around 2600 at 70 mph, but I have slightly larger than stock tires - 255/70

235/75 r15 tires, 3.73 gears and I run at almost 3000rpm when cruising at 70mph. I guess mine is running a little high.

I have 3.73's with stock tires & rims, chip, cat back & kkm and my rpms are around 2.5k @ 70...
Seems normal to me!

i am also into mustangs and when we go with bigger gear ratio's we have to put in a speedo gear to recalibrate our speedo will this work for the X

Tech:If when you step down on the accelerator at say 65 or 70 and notice the rpm,s immmediatly jump 3 or 4 hundred rp,s then you have a a torque converter lock up selenoid in the valve body thats not functioning.Your rpm,s should be about 2000/2100 at 70. A selenoid will fail at one moment and you will observe the natural slippage of the converter that takes place without the converter clutch functioning.I would suppose that since this selenoid is computer controled that its possible the computer may not be functioning (properly)hence not activating the selenoid (less likely).I have the 91 ranger with stock tires and my rpm,s are about 2100 at 70. You other guys need to read this post carefully and check your selenoids too.2600/3000 sounds mighty high. 3 thou sounds like a 3-4 shift selenoid not working.

I've got 3.73 and rpms are about 2500 at 73 to 75. They are about 3500 at 105. Sounds normal to me. And I know my trans is OK.

i've noticed that everyone that has posted either has a second generation or third generation explorer and i'm not sure if this makes a difference. I'm looking for someone to post with a 91-94 explorer with p235/75/r15 tires and a 3.73 rear end. with an automatic tranny and 4.0 pushrod motor. i think this may help me.

again, it doesn't sound like the engine is racing at all, it just seems that the rpm's are running to high, but my mind may be playing tricks on me. i don't get the car on the highway all that much so when i do i always check for stuff like that. also i think i am counting 4 shifts, but not positive...

My 94 with stock size tires and 3.73 turns about 2300-2400 at 70.
Mathematically with the torque converter locking up 70mph should have the engine turning 2333.333 RPMs.

So I would say that's about right.

If you're running at very high RPMs than normal, your TC probably isn't locking up properly. The Taurus has been getting a little uppity about the TC, and i'm worried because the AX4N in Ford's FWD vehicles will make the A4LD look like the best transmission ever made ;)

31" tires/chip/intake/catback and im about 2500rpm at 70 too.

I have 32" tires with 4.10 gears.. which equates back to 3.73 rear end with 235x75 r15 tires... with a 4.0 OHV motor and an auto tranny...

I see the following
2800 rpms at 80
2500 rpms at 75

The above is when driving in OD in lockup

I don't know 70... but I can look on the way home tonight..

I checked last night...

60 mph is 1900 rpms
70 mph is 2400 rpms
75 mph is 2650 rpms
80 mph is 2900 rpms

I checked my math again.. 235x75xr-15 (28" tire) with 3.73 is the same as a 32" tire (31.5) with 4.10 gears.. so these number should be close to yours

thanks maniak...i may be just getting myself worked up about nothing. i flush the tranny fluid on a regular basis and the level is fine...and yes i drive in it OD. I think i'm just getting worked up about nothing
