98 explorer sport track 4.0 ohv, 90k miles
I live in fairbanks, alaska and do alot of offroading in the snow. yesterday I whent off through a yard with a bunch of deep snow drifts between mounds and just plowed through the snow. I made it out just fine and drove the 4-5 miles down the road to my friend's place. when we got there I noticed that my front grill was full of snow and water was dripping out of the engine compartment, I poped the hood and the whole compartment was full of snow melting off the engine. I cleaned out all the snow I could figuring the heat from the engine would melt the rest. 4 or 5 hours later i whent out to head home, reveresed out of the driveway, put it into drive, and nothing. first gear wouldn't engage at all. I put it down into first manualy and still nothing, the engine would rev just like it was in nutral. I put it in 2nd and started going fine, after a few feet in 2nd I put it into drive and it works fine 2nd-5th. reverse also works fine.
I've never had any transmition problems of any kind, and the fact that it worked fine after going through the snow drifts (was atleast 3 stop signs between there and the house) but failed after sitting (and I assume, freezing) says to me that ice may be the culprit, but I can't think of how. I've never realy done any work on the truck other than plugs belts fluids so I'm not sure how I would go about checking things.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated,
